My dad, Alan Luce and Johnny and Bill Chapman were great friends. My brother and I were around them quite a bit between the ages of 8 and probably 13. Between them playing together in the bands and Dennisport we got to know them both quite well. Johnny used to let my family rent one of his cottages behind the Christmas Shop on Lower County Road (it had a new name every year). My dad didnt have to pay any rent, but instead he painted the cottages and did repair work that Johnny needed performed. My brother and I played wiffle ball in the courtyard for hours and hours, then off to the Barn of Fun, miniature golf and the beach. Johnny showed us where the A&P was in town, and thats were my broether and I fell in love with the chicken being roasted on a spit in the A&P ovens. We had it nearly every night. Johnny would occasionalyy take us on a car tour of the Dennisport area, particularly over to another cottage he had near a windmill on the water. I clearly remember that I thought the High School kids who worked at the Dennisport restaurants had the coolest jobs, and I wanted one when I was old enough. Didnt happen. But as I got older and married and had children I returned many times to various motor inns in Dennisport. Johnny made us love it. Thanks Johnny, and I hope you, Billy and Dad are wailing away in song at the Chrystal Room of Heaven
