Genevieve Brown Obituary

Genevieve R. Brown passed away on Friday, Oct. 10, 2025.

She was born in Davenport on July 25, 1934 to Ernest and Mae Kuhl Kroeger. She attended grammar school in Eldridge and graduated from Davenport High School and Southeastern Community College in West Burlington. She also attended Iowa Wesleyan College and Western Illinois University.

She was married to Richard H. Brown for 38 years. He died on May 3, 1991. She married Robert Bixenman of Fort Madison on Aug. 4, 2000.

Gen greatly enjoyed her 53-year career. After graduating from Davenport High School, she was employed by Northwestern Bell as a long-distance telephone operator where she met Richard, who was employed by Western Electric after serving in the U.S. Navy in Hawaii. Together, they shared a love for the islands and returned many times.

Over the years, Gen and Richard lived in several different communities around the state, including Clear Lake, Mason City, Muscatine, and finally Burlington where Richard was transferred with his company. Gen had many great careers in her life which includes, First National Bank, Midwest Biscuit Company, Southeastern Community College as secretary to the Student Personnel Services Director, as well as General Electric Company. She retired from GE after a 25-year career as a secretary in employee relations and manufacturing operations. She then became a realtor for 10 years with Coldwell Banker Great River Realty in Burlington, retiring for the second time in 2005.

Gen was a charter and devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church in Burlington, where she remained active throughout her life. She served her community in many ways, including the SCC Advisory board, GE Retirees Board of Directors, and RSVP Advisory board. She was also a past member of Burlington's Women's Club, the Burlington/West Burlington Chamber of Commerce, The Des Moines County Historical Society, Skiowans and was involved in 4-H in Scott County, Iowa. Gen dedicated a lot of her free time to volunteer activities, like volunteering at "Smoochie Poochie" in Fort Madison, a thrift shop with proceeds going to P.A.W. Animal Shelter.

Her passion for writing led her to the "Memories to Memoirs" Writing Club that met monthly at the Burlington Public Library; she was in the process of writing her life story as well as her husband's. She organized a writing club in Greengate Grove in Mission, Texas where she and her husband Bix spent their winters.

From the age of 15, Gen faithfully wrote in her journal every day. She felt strongly about the need for everyone to keep a journal and write in it daily to tell their life story. Gen cared deeply for her family and was known as a kind, caring, and generous person. She found joy in reading, writing, organizing, and exercising rather it be walking, swimming, or bicycling. She also enjoyed traveling with Bix around the country in their motor home as well as traveling abroad. Gen and Robert were members of Two Rivers Bank and Trust Good Neighbors Club, through which they enjoyed many memorable trips to destinations such as New York, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and countless other wonderful places with the club.

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Bixenman and her cherished children: Jeffrey Brown and wife Sandy of Wever, and (Adam, Kate, Jade, Cadence); Kimberly McCulloch and her husband Mark, and grandchildren Joshua McColluch and Layla Brown, and great-grandson Kai of Columbia Missouri; Kevin Brown and his wife Teresa, and grandchildren Cole, Haley and Kaitlyn, of Davenport Iowa; Nancy Askew, and granddaughter Lauren Brown, and great-grandson Arlo of San Francisco, four step-children, and 10 step-grandchildren, sister Kathleen Betchkal of Shaker heights, Ohio and brother Kurt Kroeger of Long Grove, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Brown, Sisters Erna M. Wolf and Lee Kappeler, brother Davip P. Kroeger, and son Steve Brown.
