George John Gogas, 96, of Missoula, Mont., passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2025. The family invites you to join them in celebrating his life at the Missoula Art Museum, on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m.

I was a student of George's from 1958 thru 1961. I still do a lot of good artwork because of his talent and ability to make you see what you are doing. I was also a neighbor in Target Range and spent many a day releasing calves from the hours and hours of roping in his arena. Fond memories that pop up several times a year.

Condolences to Lynn and your entire family, we were neighbors on South Ave in the 1980´s and enjoyed our friendship greatly. George was truly one of a kind and we enjoyed seeing his artwork.

I had Mr Gogas as an art teacher at Hellgate in the late 70s. I really respected him, he taught me so much. I am now traveling thru Europe for my second 90 day tour, and I try to see art museums whenever I can. This time in Vienna I went to two. And like the last tour I did in 2019, as I stood in front of famous paintings in awe, I thought of Mr. Gogas and what he taught us in art history. I wondered if he ever got to see these famous paintings he talked so lovingly about. And I had posted that on my Facebook page, asking my friends in Montana if they knew if he was still around in Missoula. We are planning a trip to Montana next year. Sadly, a friend of mine answered my question and sent me his obituary. I am so sorry to read of his passing. I just wanted to let you know he made a huge impact on my life and my love of art.
