Phyllis Scherrer Obituary

Phyllis Joan Scherrer

Augusta, MT – Phyllis Joan Scherrer passed away November 1, 2021, peacefully in her sleep to be with her savior Jesus Christ, at home as she wished. Phyllis's life started in May of 1938, when she was born in Glasgow, Montana to Lorretta and Arthur Swanson. One of mom's most memorable events during her youth is when she had finally talked her mother into letting her out of the house; she went on a DECCA trip, but it was cut short because of the boys!!! Mom graduated from Glasgow High School in 1955. She was a member of the Alpha Psi Omega chapter and graduated with honors from Northern College with a two-year teaching diploma in 1958 and in 1960 she received her B.S. degree in elementary education.

She taught at schools located in Glasgow, Great Falls, Augusta and Golden Ridge. In total, mom taught school for twelve years, teaching grades K-2 and music K-6 grades. When she wasn't teaching school, she was teaching piano at home. She taught Sunday School for 31 years, cooked for her four men and hired help, etc. She was always on the go.

Phyllis enjoyed being the activity director at T.M.C. hospital and nursing home for four years. She was a volunteer senior companion and encouraged others to do the same. She was a long-term member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hatters and enjoyed women's bible study. Mom was a giver and stretched herself thin at times getting involved in too many things at once.

Phyllis met her future husband at a dance in the Civic Hall, now the Augusta Museum, when she and her friend, Susan Schrader, came to play music for the golden wedding anniversary for Mr. & Mrs. Howard Bowman. They met and danced each other "off their feet". They married July 15, 1961, in Glasgow, Montana. She taught that first year in Augusta. Little Freddie put a temporary stop to her school teaching career until he was a little older. Then came the twins! That was definitely a highlight; however, mom had to be honest and say, "whenever she saw twins birth announcements in the newspaper, the first thing that came to her mind is to send the lucky couple a sympathy card." (Just kidding)

Mom enjoyed the grandchildren but liked sending then home so she could get a couple nights of rest. It still holds true to this day even though they are a lot older. Phyllis is survived by her sisters Janet Swanson Worrall (Harvey) and Dorothy Swanson Wilhelmi (Larry); son Fred (Agnes) Scherrer III; son Robert (Debbie) Scherrer; Son Richard (Rhonda) Scherrer; eight grandchildren, two-great grandchildren, and Carol Scherrer Gibbons – (sister-in-law). She was preceded in death by her parents Loretta and Arthur Swanson, stepmother Mary Swanson, brother Arthur Swanson, Fred her husband of 58 years, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is remembered as a loving wife, caring mother, instructing grandmother, aunt, generous neighbor, best friend, but most importantly, as a devoted follower of her Lord, Jesus Christ. Mom will truly be missed by family and friends.

The family would like to thank everyone for their support and friendship over the years. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Gorder-Jensen Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Friday November 19th, 2021, at the Augusta Community Church in Augusta. A reception will be held immediately after the memorial.
