Roger Elmo Indreland
Roger Elmo Indreland passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021. He was 81 years old.
Roger was born on July 2, 1940, in Harlowton, Montana to Elmer and Elo Indreland. Starting in his early childhood, his parents were hardworking ranchers in the Snowy Mountains and so he was destined to carry on the ranching gene of both his parents and grandparents. In January of 1945, his family moved to the Missoula area where they had purchased property northwest of Missoula, which is still known today as the Indreland "Grasshaven" Ranch. Roger was raised on the Ranch with his two younger brothers, Elling and Cornelius.
Roger served a short stint in the military prior to his first son's birth. He was blessed with his two boys, Rory and R. Dean, during his marriage with Goldie Jean Christopher. They raised the boys on the Indreland Ranch and at their home up Grant Creek.
Roger worked as a resin salesman and traveled all over the western part of the country selling resin to lumber yards and mills. Later in life, Roger met Brenda Kay Potter at the Champion Lumber yard where she had worked at the time while he was making a sales visit. They married in 1982 and lived in an old homestead cabin for most of their lives together. In his later years, he and Brenda enjoyed going for soaks at the hot springs and going for drives on the Ranch.
Roger had a love for horseracing and spent a lot of time traveling to watch his thoroughbreds run. If you knew Roger, you knew of his distaste of politicians, his car collecting hobby, his missing thumb from an incident with a stud horse, and his method of castrating bull calves, to which he displayed every spring during the brandings at the Ranch. The Indreland family has worked to carry on Grandpa Elmer's tradition of raising quality Hereford cattle on the beloved Indreland Ranch; a tradition both of Roger's sons and family will continue after his death, as he had always hoped.
Roger is preceded in death by his brother Elling. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; two sons, Rory (Mary) and Dean (Karen); six grandchildren, Kelsey, Ely (Libby), Kaitlyn, Abby, Wyatt, and Owen; two great-grandchildren, Penny and RayLynn; and brother, Cornelius.
Services will be announced and held next spring.

My dad was a life long friend of Roger's. They went to high school together. I mostly know him from my dad's summer visits to Missoula, when they'd play golf together. I was a young teenage brat, but Roger put up with me anyway. You didn't have to know him long to know what a great guy he was. When he lost his thumb to the stallion, I remember him saying (while poking me in the ribs), "when life takes a piece out of you, you get back up and keep going." I didn't know him well, but I knew him well enough. I miss that guy and will always remember him.

I was saddened to learn of Roger's recent passing. He was one of a kind and was a friend to everyone. I always enjoyed our conversations we had at our Sentinel Class of '58 Reunions as he shared his life on the ranch. Roger was an outstanding highschool wrestler on Coach Jug Beck's State Championship teams, Roger took 2nd Place in his Championship Match which was a great achievement. All of us in our Class of '58 will certainly miss Roger and the smile he always had on his face. Wishing his family peace and comfort during this difficult time. RIP Roger Indreland. Sending condolences to the family. I remember Roger fondly from when he and my dad, Billy, had visits and many tradings. Their love of the thoroughbred horse was what I remember the most. My sincere apologies in your loss.
