"The Lord blessed him with colorful times, millions of miles, a great wife, a beautiful part of the mountain world to perform in, a salty sense of humor, an eye for art and livestock, and lots of years to do it. Not bad -- not bad at all." Darol

William M. "Bill" Holt, son of Helen Mettler, was born May 12, 1930, in Great Falls. His early childhood was spent in the St. Thomas Orphan Home. At about school age he was placed with the Owen and Elsie Holt Family in Great Falls. Upon graduation from high school, he joined the Marines and served in the San Diego area on the equestrian team. After mustering out, he attended Montana State University, in Bozeman (then Montana State College) and received his BS in Animal Science. This is where he met his bride to be, Ramona, and they embarked on 67 years of married life together.
As a member of the Rodeo Team at Montana State University, he competed at the first College Rodeo Finals at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. This began a 40+ year career of announcing Professional Rodeos, Horse Shows, Horse Racing, and Auctioneering. He and Ramona traveled to perform their services throughout the Northwest and Canada. In 1967 he announced the Equestrian Division of the Pan American Games in Canada, and for over 30 years announced and produced the Oral Zumwalt Memorial Rodeo held up Miller Creek in Missoula. Later, Bill could be seen donating his time auctioneering at fundraising events raising millions of dollars for charity. He loved the people he worked with and the challenge of each performance. Many of the people they met at different venues remained lifelong friends.
Bill and Ramona, the power couple and serial entrepreneurs, were involved in numerous endeavors over the years. Highlights include:
• First to export Longhorn Cattle to Australia
• The Longhorn Supper Club in Lolo (now site of Lolo Creek Steakhouse)
• Wapiti Resort in Seeley Lake
• Timber Heritage Foundation
• Travelers' Rest State Park
• Holt Heritage Museum.
Organizations that he loved and supported included: Montana FFA, Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame, Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame, Western Montana Fair, Montana Historical Society, Boy Scouts of America, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, American Legion, Southside Lions and Western Montana Military Officers Association.
It was not unusual to see Bill walking the trail along the road at Lolo, the soccer fields or Southgate Mall in Missoula. The highlight of his walk would be visiting with whoever he saw or watching the children and dogs.
He viewed his family as his greatest achievement and was proud of their accomplishments.
Bill is survived by his wife Ramona, Lolo; sons Bret (Lou Ann) Holt, Lolo; Roger Holt, Huntley; Bart Holt, Missoula; Patrick Holt, Australia. Grandson; Michael (Jessica) Zander; Great Grandchildren Alex and Karlee Zander, Soda Springs, Idaho.

One day when I was cooking at the restaurant Bill snuck up on me with a handful of snow and put it down my back. I never did get even. It was a pleasure to work for them at various jobs at Wapiti!

Dear Ramona and family - our profound condolences upon reading just today of Bill´s passing. Both of you were a big part of our decade in Lolo. I never tired of listening to Bill´s stories about growing up in Great Falls, and then meeting you Ramona, the love of his life. It was always fun to walk around the museum and hear his stories about acquiring the pieces of your wonderful collection. He brought those people to life. Our 25th wedding anniversary was that much more special since we celebrated it at the Museum with that fabulous surprise party. Good times, good times. So as you would always sing at the end of a party, "Happy Trails `till we meet again."

Dear Ramona, Bret, Roger & Bart. I was saddened to find out that Bill had passed away. For some reason, I was thinking about you & Bill a few weeks ago and that is when I found out. I always loved going with my Dad (Raleigh) & Mom (Emma) to see you in Lolo growing up. I know that Bill & my Dad always enjoyed each other's company immensely. I wish I could have come to the memorial. You will be in my thoughts & prayers tomorrow. Sending love your way as well.
I'm sure that Bill & my Dad are enjoying each other's company in Cowboy Heaven.

My thoughts and prayers are with Ramona and her family. Bill was a most unique person. His background made him a valuable member of the Montana Historical Society Board. He had a keen understanding of the steps we would have to climb to be successful managing the state-owned assets in Virginia City and Nevada City. I always listened carefully to his ideas, suggestions, and observations, and they helped guide my actions. He and Ramona helped me navigate the politics of the day (with both a big "P" and a little "p"), and I´m grateful for their advice and interest in the success of that project. There will not be many other people like Bill. Rest In Peace.

My deepest condolences Ramona, Brett & Lou Ann, Roger, Bart & Patrick. I have so many fond memories of Bill and Ramona coming for the Rodeo. One in particular was when a bucking horse went under the fence and another was when a bull got loose. Between Bill at the microphone and Reg Kessler doing his thing, no one was hurt, and we all felt safe. I also fondly remember him and his buffalo. I was just a kid growing up but what an impact on my childhood memories. All my love

I am soo very sorry for your loss, Ramona. I will forever miss his talent as an auctioneer when I worked at the CMC Foundation; it was always with such a beautiful, and energetic style. As a farm girl, I loved it every single year! I hope you are doing well, Ramona, and I send all my love. Condolences.
