James Yelton

James David Yelton, age 78, of McKinney Cove, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025 at Yancey House, surrounded by his loving sons and brother. Born on Aug. 3, 1947, he was a native of Mitchell County and the son of the late James and Irene Yelton. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ophelia "Peanut" Yelton; his brothers, Roger and Ferrell Yelton; and his sisters, Doris Duvall, Maxine Ollis, and Louvella Yelton.
Yelton was a home builder and had a passion for his work as a carpenter. He was drawn to the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and feeding the birds. He also loved old cars and his tractor. A well-known tradition of his was making apple butter to share and enjoy with his family. Most importantly, his heart was filled with love for his family, friends, and his old dog, and nothing meant more to him than spending time with them. His presence will be missed by so many who loved him, but his memory will live on in their hearts.
Family meant everything to him, and he leaves behind a brother, George Yelton and wife Alice, of Avery County. James was a proud father to four sons, Junior Yelton and wife Lisa of Spruce Pine, Jeffery Yelton and wife Jennifer of Bakersville, Danny Yelton and wife Crystal of Avery County, and Randell Yelton of Marion. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 7 in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. The Rev. Mike Dale Laws and the Rev. Ronnie Whitson officiated. Burial followed in the L.G. Gouge Cemetery. The family received friends prior to the services at the funeral home.
