Wayne Puetz, 77, of Mitchell, SD, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 18, at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Wayne Puetz was born on June 7, 1947, in Whittier, California, to Clarence and Josephine (Herrmann) Puetz. He leaves behind a profound legacy of love, joy, and commitment to family and community. His journey was one of determination, positivity, and boundless enthusiasm-traits that touched everyone he encountered.
In 1969, Wayne graduated from St. Mary's College in Winona, MN receiving a bachelor's degree in psychology.
Wayne's love story began with Mary Andert, the woman who became his partner in life and business. On December 27, 1969, in the midst of a blizzard, Wayne married Mary, and together they formed an inseparable bond that lasted over 55 years. Their shared passions-faith, entrepreneurship, adventure, and a deep belief in living life to the fullest-made them a dynamic duo. They co-founded Wayne and Mary's Nutrition Center, and later became co-owners of Puetz Construction, which evolved into Puetz Design Build. They were later joined in business by their son Mark. Mary was his greatest partner and advocate, particularly during some of the most challenging moments of his life. Together, Wayne and Mary not only built a successful partnership but also a shared vision of helping others and building a healthier, stronger community. Over his lifetime, Wayne was active on numerous local and regional boards in support of the community, education, the church, and the construction industry.
When Wayne lost his vision and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in his early 20's, he and Mary continuously sought new and alternative approaches to treating his disease. Their faith in God and relentless commitment to health and well-being enabled Wayne not just to manage his symptoms but to live a truly vibrant life.
A man of constant optimism, Wayne introduced his family to the importance of positive thinking. As a father, he instilled in his children the belief that every day was an opportunity to make the world a better place. Mornings began with his enthusiastic "Good Morning! Rise and shine today is going to be a great day!" a phrase that echoes in the hearts of all who knew him. He also gifted his children with books like The Power of Positive Thinking, teaching them to face life's challenges with courage and optimism.
Wayne's greatest joy was spending time with Mary and the family. He and Mary were always game for an adventure, whether hunting and fishing or traveling to different parts of the world. He poured hours into gently coaching, mentoring, and playing with his grandchildren. He could be found climbing trees, swimming at the pond, playing cards, or cheering them on in their activities. Well into his 70s, he remained active, enjoying outdoor adventures like downhill skiing, hunting, fishing, and backyard volleyball. His generosity knew no bounds, always ensuring that everyone was cared for, whether by offering a thoughtful conversation or a $20 bill when someone left town.
Wayne's kindness was matched only by his curiosity. He loved history trivia, enjoyed watching tennis and basketball, and could always be found cheering on his grandchildren at athletic events or musical performances. He engaged with everyone he met, taking a genuine interest in their lives and offering a listening ear.
Wayne's legacy is one of love, joy, and an infectious belief that every day was an opportunity to make the most of life. He leaves behind a family who will forever carry his spirit: his wife, Mary; his children, Mark (Katie Murphy) Puetz, Mitchell, SD; Melanie (Scott) Mullenmeister, Mitchell, SD; Emily (Sam) Reid, Niwot, Colorado; and Amy (Ken) Novak, Davenport, Iowa; and his 15 grandchildren. His memory will live on in the stories shared around the dinner table, in the lessons he imparted, and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Wayne's family extends immeasurable gratitude to the caregivers, staff at Avera Brady and Avera Hospice, the physicians and nurses of the Avera system, the support of the Mitchell Catholic community and PES sisters, brothers, and priests, and the countless friends, family members, and relatives who have walked alongside us during this journey.
Wayne's life was a testament to faith, the power of positivity, the value of hard work, a deep sense of gratitude, and the importance of family. He will be dearly missed but forever remembered for the light he brought into the world.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Avera Brady, the PES Catholic Community, or other charities in Wayne's honor.
