Charles Winston Obituary

Mr. Charles R. Winston -- The Farewell Hour is Noon Saturday at Second Avenue Beulah Baptist, 1022 Second Avenue, Bessemer, Alabama 35020. Pastor C. D. Patterson, Officiant. Inhumation will follow at Lincoln Cemetery. This Servant of God came into existence on July 10, 1933 in Jackson, Alabama. Son of the late Charlie Jackson and Eunice Estelle Winston, he migrated to Bessemer where he attended school. Upon obtaining employment at Packing House Market, he became fondly known as 'Packing House Charlie'. His affiliation with Second Avenue Beulah Church Baptist was the hub of his Christian Spirit; however, he was expansively recognized for his desire and ability to assist the needy. As operator of Winston and Associates, he fondly referred to himself as 'Advocate for the Poor.' Out of Mr. Winston's philanthropic nature came Bessemer's City-Wide Thanksgiving Dinner, of which he was immensely proud. Much of his time was lent to various need-based and civic organizations, including the American Red Cross, JCCEO, Ministers-In-Action and Bessemer Voters League. He was widower of Mrs. Willie B. Winston. C. R. Winston's memory will linger with Marian Little, Rev. Charles R. (Debra) Winston, Debra (Alfred) McCray and Wanda (William) Hawkins, his children; Barbara Fisher Winston, mother of the children; Gerry (Chandra) Reeves, a special son; Mattie Jackson, mother; Joyce (Ray) Ausby, Percy (Dorothy), Prentice and David (Rose) Hargrove, Charlie Jackson, Lou Ida (Joe) McCarroll and Betty Kelly, siblings; Albertha and Johnnie Mae Coleman; aunts and Cedric Coleman, a special nephew. Calling Hours at Johnson Memorial, Bessemer, Friday Noon until 9:00.
