Joseph Druhan Obituary

Joseph Michael Druhan, Jr., 79, a lifelong resident of Mobile, died on August 7, 2021. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Michael Druhan, Sr. and Artie Graham Druhan; his infant sister Mary Ellen Druhan; and his son Ross Heatherington Druhan. Mike is survived by his wife, Arvid E. Druhan; his son, Joseph Michael Druhan, III (Catherine) his two grandchildren, Joe and Mary Ellen; and his law partner and dear friend Deena Tyler (John Blanton.) Mike attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from McGill Institute in 1960. He attended Georgetown University and returned home upon his Father's death to graduate from his beloved Spring Hill College. He was President of the Jesuit honorary, Alpha Sigma Nu, and was the Distinguished Military Graduate of his class. In college, he managed the family cattle operation in Baldwin County, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Alabama Law School in 1967 and served as the DKE intramural football Coach while in Tuscaloosa (called "Coach" by numerous friends for many years.) Mike was not limited to just one nickname. He will be more famously remembered as the "Silver Fox" since his hair turned silver in his early thirties. Mike served as an Infantry Captain with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star with 2 Oakleaf Clusters, the Soldier's Medal for Valor, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Upon discharge he was appointed as a felony prosecutor in the Mobile County District Attorney's Office. He moved into private practice and was recently a partner in the law firm of Druhan & Tyler. He served as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Alabama since 1994, and President of the Mobile Bar Association in 2014. He was active in the South Alabama Community, serving on several boards such as Mobile County Republican Executive Committee, Mobile Police and Fire Retirement Board, Advisory Board of Spring Hill College, past District Governor of Serra International, Mobile Catholic Archdiocese Priest's Retirement Board, Director of Ronald McDonald House in Mobile, McGill Toolen Foundation Board, Lions Club of Mobile, and Past Alabama Keyperson for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Mike was an avid outdoorsman, particularly enjoying his afternoons at Pecan Outing Club, or hunting doves or turkey. He enjoyed his time with two mystical societies where he considered Mardi Gras as one of his hobbies. Services will be held, Tuesday, August 10th at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with visitation in the former church from 10:30-11:30 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Michael Catholic High School Guardian Angel Program (11732 St. Michael Way, Fairhope, AL 36532) or the Historic Restoration Society (P.O. Box 1506, Mobile, AL 36633.)

Mike was a great friend to my dad (Foster). As a kid I loved hearing all the great stories of them hunting & fishing. I didn´t know he was such a decorated a veteran. His only stories he told me about Vietnam was how the jungle there was full of bugs and how he couldn´t stand them. He always had a full can of Off bug repellent at our dove hunts. I always got a kick out of him and his bug spray.
What a gentleman, sportsman and a great man.
RIP Mr Durhan
