Charles Louis Freitas "The Portagee"

Turlock, California - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles Louis Freitas, affectionately known as "The Portagee", who left us on May 5, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in Oakland, California, to Gladys Brown Freitas and Louis Freitas, Chuck was one of six siblings, growing up alongside his four older sisters- Gloria, Stella, Marie, Beatrice, and younger sister Margaret.

In 1955, Chuck married Eloise Mendoza, and together they built a life in San Leandro and later, Castro Valley, California. They raised three children; Cindy, David, and Cathy. During this time he worked for Ford Motor Company as a painter and moonlighted at Johnnies Tow Service. After retiring from Ford Motor Company, he moved to Turlock, California in 1989 meeting many more friends.

He was an excellent bodyman and painter. He built many Hot Rods and restored many cars, some winning Dearborn Awards. He was still doing metalwork and painting until he passed. He was a great friend to many people and will be surely missed. Chuck was a big presence, a big personality with a wonderful, deep heartfelt laugh and always available to help a friend. He had a passion for cars and enjoyed any car show, swap meet, or flea market.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Marie, Beatrice, Margaret, and daughter Cathy. He is survived by sisters Gloria and Stella, daughter Cindy (Leroy) and son David, as well as multiple nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He is also survived by his special companion of 28 years Joanne Speckens.
