Only now (early 2024) did I learn of Dan's passing, and of course I am both deeply saddened and embarrassed that I was unaware for so long. I came to know of Dan through his Fishwatcher's books, and the result was that I developed the highest respect for him. As I began a second career in the 1980s as an explorer and diver, particularly about Cordell Bank, we became sturdy and trusted friends. When I published my first book, "Ecology of an Underwater Island," Dan helped me choose the appropriate title, and I have been grateful a thousand times over. Then in 1986, he extended an invitation to become a member of the Explorers Club, and that changed my life completely. Over three decades, as I have moved from one project to the next, I interacted with Dan every year or so, always with respect and appreciation for what he had done before we met and what he had done to enable my career as an explorer. In retrospect, I believe that I so came to assume that he was part of my life I neglected to personally interact with him as much as I should have; we just didn't keep in touch. In 2013, I included a brief bio of Dan on the website for my expedition to Clipperton Island (http://www.cordell.org/CI/CI_Team/CI_Gotshall.html). Now, belatedly, I affirm my appreciation for who he was and all he did for me. Dan, you're now part of the ocean, and I will always think of you in the world you knew, loved, and brought to thousands through your books. Thank you for the gifts you gave me and to so many other people.

On behalf of my family, I am sorry to learn of Dan's passing. He and my Father Ed Zimbelman were diving buddies for many years and enjoyed their adventures as younger men. They were true explorers of all things relating to the Monterey Bay,much of which my family shared with them. My condolences to his family.
