David Douma Obituary

David Harry Douma, a native of Ripon, CA passed away on April 23, 2016 in San Francisco, CA.
A professional organist of talent and imagination he was also proficient on the piano and harpsichord. He had over 40 years of professional church music experience including College Avenue Congregational Church in Modesto, St. Francis Episcopal Church in Turlock, the Episcopal Church of St. Annes in Stockton, and the Episcopal Church of St. Giles at St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA.
Over the years he was accompanist for The Townsend Opera Players, Modesto Symphony Orchestra, California State University Stanislaus and many regional musical theater companies, community choruses and festivals.
For over a decade David was organist for the Ripon Oratorio's annual performance of Handel's "Messiah."
He is survived by his husband of almost 8 years, Claude Wynne, whom he married on November 2, 2008 (two days before Prop 8 passed). He is also survived by his sister Joan and family in Michigan, and dog Samson.
A memorial service in David's honor will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 2:00pm at College Avenue Congregational Church in Modesto, 1341 College Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.

David was a glorious organist and a kind soul. I watched him from the pew week after week from a very young age and drew much inspiration from him as a budding keyboardist. I remember him fondly as one of my earliest musical influences, and am grateful for his talents and encouragement along the way.

I first meet David in 1989. I am just now learning of his passing, we lost touch with each other. I think of him often, he is missed.

I went to school at Ripon Christian school and to the same church growing up in the Ripon area. I will remember David fondly playing the piano and the organ at school and church. I didn't know of his passing until 6/9/16 but would like to have honored his memory by attending his Memorial service.
