Dennis Bacon Obituary

Dennis Mark Bacon
1949 ~ 2014
Dennis Mark Bacon, 64 of Mapleton, Utah died Monday morning May 12, 2014 in Provo, Utah after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.
Dennis was born to Chancy and Donna Mae Johnson Bacon on September 28, 1949 in Boise, Idaho. He attended Whitney and Monroe Elementary, South Junior High, and Borah High school, all in Boise, graduating in 1967. He married his high school sweetheart, Shannon Genille Lough in 1968. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Dennis graduated from Brigham Young University in 1971, his Bachelor's of Music Education. He was a band director for 23 years at various schools throughout Utah at elementary through college level. He received a Master's of Music in 1979 and a Master's of Education in Educational Leadership with a certificate in administration in 1995, all from BYU. With that degree he shifted his career focus to administration and was principal and assistant principle in both Wasatch and Apline School Districts. He was serving as assistance principal of Orem Junior High School at the time of his death.
Dennis was a faithful lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he served in many callings in wards and stakes, including choir director, ward music leader, teacher scoutmaster, membership clerk, mission leader, bishopric, Bishop, and Stake Presidency. He was currently serving on the high council in the Young Single Adult 19th Stake in Provo. He was also always a devoted home teacher. He and Shannon developed a great love for family history, researching and doing temple work for their ancestors and involving their grandchildren in their work. Dennis was also deeply involved in helping young men and women in his stake prepare for missionary service.
Dennis and Shannon loved doing things together including golfing, fishing and riding their three-wheeler. Fishing was always a favorite activity and for short trips after work or on Saturdays, the grandchildren would occasionally accompany them. The grandkids really loved fishing with Grandpa. They always seemed to catch more fish than they could use and would share them with friends and neighbors. Dennis and Shannon became pretty good golfers and one season they each got a hole in one, at the same golf course, on different holes. In the past 15 years one of Dennis' favorite activities was to find different fun convertibles for Shannon to drive. Every 2 or 3 years they vacationed in McCall for travel and golfing.
Dennis is survived by his loving eternal companion, his children Curtis William (Adela), Stephen Mark (Corinna), Lorraine Mae Robinson Mason (Evan), Brigham Dennis "Denny" (Ruby), Christopher Alfred, Donna Shanille Mortimer (Spencer), 25 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and another expected in July. He is also survived by his sisters Wynefred Trentman (Lee) Auburn, CA, Rochelle Pfleger (Brent) of Boise, ID and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Rollo Bacon, son-in-law Robbie Robinson, and grandsons Jaylen Zane Bacon and Dallin McKade Bacon.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Mapleton North Stake Center at 475 N 1600 West, Mapleton, Utah. There will be a viewing at the church on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 and Friday from 12:15 to 1:45 prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that you please donate to the LDS Church Missionary Fund.
