Derek Robert Colby Mauldin was born in Modesto on July 3, 1983 and left us tragically on January 12, 2016.
Derek was an amazing person. He was fiercely patriotic, loved the San Francisco Giants, and the outdoors. He loved spending time at the family cabin in Lake Tahoe and camping anywhere. Opening Day trout season in April with all the men every year was his favorite weekend. He loved to drive and knew every road in California. He also loved to travel; spending many family vacations in Mexico.
He graduated from Beyer High School and from Stanislaus State with honors. He studied in Viterbo, Italy for a year and traveled to Austria, Germany, France, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Greece, Egypt, and Israel - he couldn't explore enough places!
He also loved animals - any stray would find a new home. He had an amazing imaginative mind and designed and built numerous things.
He leaves behind his parents, Robert and Debbi Mauldin, his brother Ryan (Laurie), sister Kelly Ness (Brian), nieces Ashley and Alexis, nephew Andrew Mauldin, nieces Morgan and Kendall Ness, all of whom he loved and adored. Uncle Lance Anderson (Judy), Uncle Dan Anderson (Terri), Uncle Tom Mauldin (Cat), Aunty Kitty Herrick (Jeff). As well as numerous cousins. Also, his best friend ever - his constant companion of ten years, his dog Tecumseh; who is heart broken and lonely without him.
A celebration of life will be held on January 22nd at 1:00pm at Salas Brothers in Modesto, with reception to follow.

Derek was fun loving and full of life. I had the pleasure of having him work for me at Modesto Ace Hardware. We still kept in touch and he would visit with his best pal, Tecumseh in Richland Ace Hardware in Ceres. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and to his best pal, Tecumseh.

Derek was so much fun and so full of energy. I will never forget all the fun times we had, especially when he lived and worked with me. He was the type of person that loved to sit down and have long meaningful conversations and he could always make you smile. He always spoke so compassionately about his family, friends, and all his dreams. Whenever I was in his presence I felt loved and special. He was a truly genuine person with such zest for life, learning, and exploring. All my love and prayers to his family and friends.
