Eric Ostrom Obituary

ERIC JAY OSTROM
OCT 14, 1923 - APR 22, 2014
Eric J. Ostrom, MD, Age 90 years, died on April 22, 2014 of complications caused by Alzheimer's Disease. He died at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, CA. Dr. Ostrom was born October 14, 1923 in Seattle, Washington to Charles and Dorothy Ostrom. He practiced internal medicine for 53 years in Modesto with an office on College Avenue and was one of the original founding doctors of Doctor's Medical Center, Modesto, California. Eric became interested in medicine while serving in the U.S. Navy January 11,1943 - October 27,1945 as an Apprentice Seaman V-12 USNR. An internist is a physician who specializes in internal medicine, or the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Internists specifically see adult patients, serving as primary care physicians. They are trained to understand multiple diseases and conditions that may affect a person, including how they are related or interact. They also focus on disease prevention and management, including women's health, mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, and common health problems.
Eric loved medicine and his patients. He was grieved when it became necessary for him to retire and he missed working as long as he lived. He was loved by his patients and was a compassionate physician who "took the time" to listen. On Tuesday, April 22, 2014 Eric passed into the arms of "The Great Physician" with whom he was already well acquainted. Even in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's/Dementia, he was frequently heard praying and praising his Lord. After medicine, he loved fishing, then fishing, and then fishing. Eric was married to Deanna, his wife of 36 years. He had a daughter, Kelly, stepdaughter, Rhonda Vierra, and stepson. Perry Evans. He is survived by two granddaughters, Natalie and Cassady Vierra, and one great grandson. Trace Matthew Starns. The family is grateful for the care and treatment received by Sivorn Suon, Eric's devoted caregiver. He was cared for with love and respect as well as humor.
Eric attended and Graduated Ballard High School, Seattle Washington
Graduated B.S. Degree 3/21/1947, University of Washington, Seattle Washington
Graduated M.D. Degree 6/12/1951, University of Rochester, School of Medicine, Rochester, New York
Interned in Medicine 1951-1952, George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D.C.
Assist Resident in Medicine 1952-1953, St Louis City Hospital, St Louis, Missouri
Fellow in Cardiovascular Disease 1953-1954, University of Alabama, Birmingham, Alabama. One of his most enjoyable memories was being able to train as a Fellow in Cardiology with a physician named Tinsley Harrison who wrote the book—Principles of Internal Medicine, to be exact, considered by some to be the Bible of internal medicine. One of his first paying jobs was to proofread Tinsley's tome.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I was so lucky to have worked w/Eric at National Health Plans for a few years. He was a delightful person to work with, to visit with, to hear fishing stories and what a great teacher for a nurse to have! I adored him. I have thought of him so often and use the medical information I learned from him on a daily basis in my work, hearing the words he would use to explain a diagnosis and treatment to me. I am sorry for the loss of such a wonderful person. Rest in peace Dr. Ostrom
