Forrest Glenn Jackson

Modesto, California - Forrest G Jackson Jr passed away in Modesto, CA December 20, 2021, at the age of 93. He was born in Gallup, New Mexico on January 31, 1928 to Forrest G Jackson Sr and Barbara Blucher Jackson. The family moved to Berkeley, CA and Oregon before settling in Marysville, CA. He graduated from Marysville High School in 1945 and Yuba College in 1947.
Forrest began his life-long love of photography at the age of 16 working part-time at a photo studio. He never passed up an opportunity to learn more about his craft. He also worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor where he met his future wife, Phyllis Arnold, of Wheatland, CA. They were married May 1, 1950 in Anderson, CA.
After four years working at the Marysville-Appeal Democrat, the family moved to Modesto, CA in 1951. He was employed as a news photographer for the Modesto Bee for 42 years.
Forrest received an "Innovation in Photography" award from Graflex. He travelled the seven western states and Alaska doing agriculture, editorial and scenic photography. His work appeared in Sunset's "National Parks of the West", on the covers and inside of numerous magazines, is included in the Visitor's Center in Yosemite Valley, and in the Special Collections Department of the University of California, Davis, Library.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis, of 67 years, and son, Paul. He is survived by his daughter, Corinne Knight of Woodland, and sons David (Polly) Jackson of Ceres, Michael Jackson of Oakdale, Brian Jackson of Modesto, and Dale (Sherie) Jackson of Fresno. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Modesto, the National Press Photographers Association, the Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society, and Stanislaus Fly Fisherman. Private services are scheduled. Arrangements are being handled by Franklin and Downs. Donations may be made to St. Joseph's Pantry and Helpline Ministry at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1813 Oakdale Rd, Modesto CA 95355.

I am so sorry to hear about the death of my friend. I can recall many times when I took Forest flying in a Piper Cub owned by Hawke Flying Service to take some photographs. He was a perfectionist, and he often had me make several passes to get the photo framed just right. He was always a real gentleman. Good memories. Pest in Peace, old friend. Bill Ramsey
