Gordon Switzer

September 18, 1936 - February 28, 2025

Modesto, California - Gordon was born in Waterford, CA, to Ralph Waldo Emersen Switzer and Jessie Belle Switzer (Lucore). He grew up with a deep appreciation for family, community, and service-values that shaped the rest of his life. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Alana Croyle of Modesto, CA, and Renee Switzer of Seattle, WA, his sisters, Norma Kelley and Jean Calkins, both of Modesto, as well as his extended family and friends. Preceding Gordon in death was his wife, Billie Switzer, and his grandson, Isaac Croyle.

Gordon attended McPherson College in Kansas, where he met Billie, the love of his life. Their shared sense of adventure led them from farming in Colorado to settling in Modesto, where Gordon spent 35 years shaping young minds as a dedicated fifth- and sixth-grade teacher in Oakdale and Modesto. Summers found him grading peaches, a job he took on with the same steady work ethic and care he brought to everything in life.

Service and family were central to Gordon's spirit. He traveled to Germany, Poland and Greece with the Brethren Voluntary Service, restoring buildings that were damaged by war, replanting farmlands and supporting Heifer International. He and Billie filled their lives with exploration, from climbing Half Dome to summer road trips and traveling abroad with their daughters.

Gordon played football in college, and he was a gentle giant at heart. He had a gift for making people feel special, often writing unique, heartfelt poems for family and friends. He was a father figure to many, a role model of quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and sharp wit. Even in his final days, his humor never wavered.

He found joy in life's simple pleasures-watching the 49ers, reading through his ever-growing stack of books, and playing dice and cribbage with loved ones. Gordon loved hand-watering his lawn while wearing Beats headphones and singing at the top of his lungs.

Gordon passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and lifelong learning. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the stories, laughter, and kindness he shared with all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for May 10th at 1:00 at the Modesto Church of the Brethren.
