Harold Jacobs Obituary

Harold Vincent Jacobs

February 3, 1943 - October 20, 2024

Davis, California - Harold Vincent Jacobs, a skilled attorney, avid fly fisherman, worldwide traveler, and beloved husband, father, and poppa, passed away on October 20, 2024, in Davis, California, at the age of 81. Born on February 3, 1943, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Harold and Frances Jacobs, he moved with his family from their farm in Leask, Saskatchewan to a ranch in Duncan, British Columbia on Vancouver Island. His family operated the Cobble Hill Market on Vancouver Island, living above the store, before moving to Victoria, British Columbia in 1953 and then Carmichael, California in 1955. Vince and his wife, Cecilia, lived in Riverwood, along the American River, where he took every opportunity to ride his bicycle along the parkway, volunteer, fly fish and hone his photography skills.

Vince enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping and photography. He loved being outdoors. He lived a successful, fulfilling life, full of adventure. Whether it was helping to build a cabin in the snow in Tahoe Donner, living on a houseboat on the Sacramento River, hunting in Wyoming, or fishing for salmon in Alaska, Vince loved life and cherished all the wonderful experiences he had with family and friends.

He attended California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo, California, where he received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degrees in Mathematics. After college he worked as a self-taught helicopter mechanic for the Forest Service and as a high school math teacher. Vince then attended McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1971. He was admitted to the State Bar of California on January 5, 1972, beginning his distinguished 46-year legal career. He was a founding partner of Hiroshima, Jacobs, Roth & Lewis, Attorneys of Law, where he proudly practiced law with his partners, Phil Hiroshima, Bob Roth and Ray Lewis for more than 30 years. Later in his career he used his stature in the Sacramento family law community to focus on mediation, collaborative practice and private judging, before retiring in January 2018.

Vince was well known for his life-long love of nature. As a longtime member and past president of California Fly Fishers Unlimited, he helped create and support the Fish in the Classroom program that provides fish tanks and supplies for local elementary school science programs. On annual trips to Yosemite he was renowned for leading large hiking parties to the top of Half Dome, often with people who would never have done the hike on their own without his kind and patient encouragement.

Vince is survived by his wife, Cecilia Delury; daughter, Brooke Jacobs; son, Ryan Jacobs; daughter-in-law, Amy Jacobs; step-daughter, Jane Delury; son-in-law, Don Lee; step-son, John Delury; daughter-in-law, Jeong-eun Park; and his nine grandchildren, Juniper Baythavong, Jackson Baythavong, Summer Jacobs, Casey Jacobs, Margot Deguet Delury, Rose Deguet Delury, Senna Park-Delury, Sean Park-Delury, and Hannah Park-Delury; and his sister Kathy Webb. Vince was always quick to proudly share the many accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, admitting "It's fun to brag. Life is good."

Vince and I were in Young Lawyers together, when he lived in his houseboat, and practiced law in the same community for the next 40+ years. He always had a kind word to say, which is rare in our profession. Although I never fished with him, we swapped fishing stories often and with minimal exaggeration. All were so happy for both of them when he married Cecilia. He will be missed but not forgotten.

We had the honor of knowing Vince for many years when he was president of our Fly Club California Fly Fishers Unlimited. He always had a welcoming smile and freely shared his fishing and life experiences. He shared his remarkable life with us for a short time, he will be remembered for his accomplishments & friendships. I was amazed by all he did after having heart trouble. He could overcome anything & made our world a better place.

When one looks in the dictionary for the definition of "Vincent Jacobs", as he was know to all of us fellow fly fishers, here is a partial definition: gentle, kind, supportive, smart, kind, generous, positive, and diverse. Vince was an innovative leader, open and supportive of newbies to the sport and art of fly fishing, and mostly a very giving man. Tim Au-Young

I was very sad to read of this passing. Vince was a daily customer at my bakery, muffins, etc. almost the whole time it was in existence. I enjoyed serving him and getting to know him.
I remember Vince as a kind, gentle and intelligent man. May his memory be eternal.
