James Mello Obituary

James Mello

September 27, 1943 - August 14, 2025

Hughson, California - Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Judy (Crum) Mello. The two met while cruising 10th street in Modesto, each driving matching baby blue Mustangs! He also leaves behind a daughter, Jinger (Duane) Mendonca; two beautiful granddaughters, Denae (James Walling) Mendonca, and Sara Mendonca; as well as a brother John (Barbara) Mello; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family was of great importance to him and he prayed for them daily.

Jim was a man of many hats. For 30+ years he worked full time as a groceryman at local markets such as New Deal and Richland. He was much loved by his customers. In his "spare" time, and then in his retirement, he was an almond farmer on his beloved little ranch in Hughson. In addition, he was an avid aviculturist, breeding and caring for a wide variety of bird species. These birds were often shipped all over the U.S. to other bird enthusiasts – including the iconic "Mr. Las Vegas" himself, Wayne Newton.

Jim loved to garden. He almost never left the store without grabbing some more flowers to plant. He was also a collector of many things, including cats (he could never turn away a stray) and he could never pass up found objects. He could take another man's junk and make it his treasure, and through the years together he and his wife turned their property into their own little oasis. Family and friends will remember the Easter egg hunts, Thanksgivings, Christmas, and other celebrations that were all the more special at the Mello Ranch.

All who knew Jim know that he was quite a character, a true comedian, and his quick wit was enjoyed by all. He loved to tease and entertain people. He had an incredible memory and was a great teller of stories.

Jim knew so many people whether it was through the MPPA and IMDES Portuguese Associations, various farm associations, bird clubs etc. Over the span of several decades, he could be found most mornings with his "breakfast group" at restaurants like Jenny's, Grizzly Rock, and My Garden Café.

In recent years however, he joked that he had more friends that were dead than alive. And although he never missed a funeral, he often told his family he did not want one upon his passing. So instead, his family will have a celebration of his life on what would have been his 82 birthday, September 27th at 11:00 a.m. at I.M.D.E.S Portuguese Hall – 5748 Albers Rd, Oakdale, CA 95361

Jim was truly loved and will be truly missed.

Judy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Jim was an awesome individual. He was a great friend. He was always there for me for over 30 years. I still tell his stories to my friends. Even though I moved back to Pennsylvania,we still kept in touch. I will miss him very much. He was loved by all including me. All my prayers to you and your family. Patty Elker
