Jessie Ames Obituary

Jessie Grace Ames
May 24, 1920 - July 24, 2016
Jessie Grace Ames, born May 24, 1920, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2016, in Sonora surrounded by her family. She could best be described as graceful, strong, loving and creative. As a young working woman, she was a bookkeeper and after marrying the love of her life, she became a homemaker. She taught her four girls, and granddaughters to follow, how to cook, bake, sew and knit. The most important roles she held in her long life were daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Jessie was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church and Morada Parlor of the Native Daughters of the Golden West and a former member of Daughters of St. George and Rockin W Rounders. When her girls were young, she and her late husband, Ed, began dancing with the Ceres Twisters Square Dancers and enjoyed many years traveling and dancing together. Their love of square dancing ultimately led them to leadership, serving as President of the California Square Dance Council. She is loved and missed by all.
Jessie is preceded in death by her husband Edward Jackman Ames, daughter Sandra L. Hudson, parents Thomas D. Kettle and Williamina A. Kettle (McKay), and siblings Winifred Lemon and Ernest Kettle. She is survived by children Barbara J. Peck and Carolyn J. Diehl both of Modesto, and Evelyn G. Proctor of Columbia. She is further remembered through her grandchildren Cheryl Titus of Turlock; Roland Hudson, James Diehl, and Thomas Diehl all of Modesto; and Kristopher Proctor and Elizabeth Newman both of Sonora. Jessie was also the great-grandmother of eight: Joe Titus, Jordan Titus, lain Proctor, Mattie Proctor, Nolan Proctor, Ashley Newman, Krystal Newman, and Tyler Newman. Elijah Titus is Jessie's first and only great-great grandchild.
A Memorial Service will be held September 16, 2016 at 2:00 pm, at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 1600 Carver Road, Modesto. Donations may be made in her honor to Memorial Medical Foundation (Modesto), Trinity united Presbyterian Church (Modesto), or a charity of your choosing.
