Joel Acosta Obituary

JOEL CHARLES ACOSTA JUL 1, 1960 - JUN 4, 2011 Joel passed away at UCSF hospital in San Francisco after a five month battle with leukemia. Joel Grew up in Hickman, CA and attended Hughson High. In 1978 he earned the California State wrestling championship title. After high school he became a partner in the family cabinet business Acosta & Sons. Joel was married to Sandi (Swanson) Acosta for 25 years & had two sons, Joel Jr. & (Carly) & Jacob. In 1994 Joel donated one of his kidneys to his son Jacob. Joel loved his wife & boys dearly. He spent a lot of time coaching both his sons in youth baseball & taught his son Joel Jr. everything he knew about wrestling. Joel's hobbies included raising beef cattle, watching his bucking bull advance, & flying his plane after earning his pilots license in 2005. Joel was loved by many, including his father & mother Simon and Ethel Acosta, brothers Clifford & (Kathy), Gary & (Sylvia), Simon & (Terri), Rudy & (Camio), & many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He will be greatly missed. Joel gave his life to God & was baptized at Calvary Chapel in 2009, & became a member of Hickman Community Church in 2010. Joel was going to be a grandpa for the first time in August 2011, but God had a different plan for him in heaven. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00pm at Calvary Chapel of Modesto on the corner of Pelandale, & American Ave. A great weapon in Joel's battle with leukemia was umbilical cord stem cells. I met your family at UCSF on June 2nd of this year, we all shared the waiting room at the ICU. Please tell your parents that I think of them often, and just how kind your entire family was to me during there time at the hospital. My husband Tom is doing pretty good, still recovering. He is in a lot of pain but seems to get through it every day. We go back to SF this coming Monday, Tom has an app. w/Dr Jahan who is a clinical trail chemotherapy doctor. Not sure when Tom will start the program, but hope it is soon. My prayers and good thoughts go out to you all. Give my best to your dear parents. Judy Metcalf PS/tell Rudy that I say HI...

Dear Acosta Family -

Joel was warm, kind and sincere, both as an adult and as he was growing up. He never missed an opportunity to say hello and asked how family was. I can remember being so proud to be from Hickman while watching him wrestle in highschool. And I can see how proud he was of his children when he spoke of them to me later in life.
Our family sends our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers.

I moved to Hughson from Modesto in 8th grade. I had just barely begun to know the hometown crowd when I was introduced to the Hickman kids as a Freshman in high school. These kids all seemed to be polite, but tough-as-nails types. Joel was one of these. What's funny is I remember the first time I met Joel. He was joking with a bunch of the older kids and he asked who I was. I introduced myself and he said, "Well, my name's Nyoel, Nyoel Acosta." It took me a little while after that to realize he was saying "Joel" rather than "Nyoel." I still laugh about that. I don't know if it was his banged up nose or my city ears but I always had a good time calling him "Nyoel."

"Nyoel" was one of those very special people that never uttered a put down or bad-mouthed others. If he didn't have anything good to say, he just didn't say it. I wish I could be more like him.

"Nyoel" will be missed. He was a kind and strong man with a gentle heart.

When my husband, myself and our three boys moved to Hickman, we enjoyed watching many baseball games with Joel, Sandi, Joel JR, and Jake. Joel and Gary spent many hours building a new snack wagon( mainly Joel) for the Hickman Youth Baseball and Softball league. We enjoyed many Friday nights watching Hughson Huskie football games with the whole Acosta family. Joel and Sandi were always very gracious with sleep overs with the boys especially Jake and our youngest Derrick. Joel and Sandi be very proud that you raised two very great young men. Our whole family will miss you Joel greatly. We pray for you and your entire family. Words can not express how much you will be missed. Rest in peace our friend.
