JOHN PAUL CROCCO JAN. 23, 1926 - NOV. 9, 2004 Dad passed away at his home after battling cancer and other medical problems. He was a third generation Modesto resident and was a graduate of Modesto High School, Class of 1943.
After high school graduation, he joined the US Navy. He was assigned to USS Hornet II, A.K.A. The Grey Ghost, from 1943-1946. The ship spent two and a half years at sea, never touching dry land. His military occupation was storekeeper, but during battle he fed ammo to the quads. The aircraft carrier was the most sought after ship by the Kamikaze. Recreation time included baseball and football games on deck.
He returned home to play baseball for Stockton, then on to pro ball with the Cardinals.
Life back home required him to return and start farming, as his father did.
Dad's first love was fishing. He spent five months a year at his home in Mexico, catching Marlin. He also enjoyed fishing The Bisbee in Cabo, having caught more than 300 Marlin in his 'career'.
When at home he and his friends would fish where ever the fish were biting!
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Crocco; children, Vicci Havens of Modesto, Chanda Meloni and husband, Barry; Taliah Lewallen of Sonora; grandchildren, Jessica Lewallen of Sonora, Joshua Lewallen of Modesto and Conner Meloni.
Viewing will be from 4:00-8:00 P.M., Sunday, November 14, at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel, with an 11:00 A.M. service, Monday, November 15, also at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.
A brief Veteran's Memorial, at graveside, will be held after the service on Monday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Community Hospice, 601 McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.
