Karl Heins Obituary

Karl Henry Heins, 60, of Modesto and Golita, died September 4 in Modesto after a short, difficult illness. He was employed by the University of California-Santa Barbara as their Chief Information Technology Officer.
Born in Augusta, Ga., to the late Charlie and Tita Heins, Karl grew up the eldest of five siblings in Charleston, S.C. From an early age, he had a broad outlook on life and was an original thinker.
Karl graduated with a master's degree in accounting from the University of South Carolina. With his "farmer's heart," he spent many of his weekends planting, and harvesting his beds of vegetables, fruit trees and bushes in his back yard. In between harvests, he could be discovered tinkering on one or more of his classic project cars in his garage. With various interests in life, he also enjoyed surfing, horse back riding, growing orchids and telling stories.
Karl was as comfortable discussing string theory as cars; his enthusiasm for learning eventually took him into teaching classes in his field as well. He was a caring listener, and he made time for people who needed it. The outpouring of support during his short illness speaks volumes for Karl's place in many people's lives. With all his gifts, interests, and abilities, Karl's greatest accomplishment—and legacy--is his family, which he cherished and supported in countless ways every day of his life.
Karl is survived by his loving wife of nearly forty years Debra Mitchell Heins, a social worker originally of Columbia, SC. He also leaves behind his cherished daughter Lore Amalia Phillips, and his son-in-law Branden Phillips, who are expecting the family's first grandchild a boy aptly named Karl James Phillips. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings Ann Lyle, John Heins, Susan Beutler, and Jean Griggs, and their sons and daughters.
Karl's memorial will be held next Saturday, September 22nd at 3:00 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stanislaus County in Modesto, California.
