Lenore Shively Obituary

Lenore Shively
August 27, 1935 - September 23, 2022
Sonora, California - Adventuresome, passionate, patriotic, and creative. These are the words we think of when we think of Lenore, but she was most definitely first and foremost all about family.
Lenore and her husband James Shively Sr., both proud Korean War Army Veterans and married for 55 years before Jim's 2010 passing, started their family in Montana not long before making the adventuresome trek with their two young boys to California's Central Valley. Modesto would never be the same. As passionate educators and school administrators, Lenore and Jim inspired and nurtured thousands of children and their families. This was Lenore's passion, and there wasn't anyone better. Former students would regularly approach her in malls, coffee shops and grocery stores with hugs and personal stories that left all with smiles and gratitude. Lenore was indeed grateful. Always grateful and never more than for her family that included James Jr., (Kelly) and Steven (Marnie). The getaways to Yosemite, swimming fun at The Sportsman of Stanislaus Club and road trips back to Montana's Big Sky layered family memories on to so many more. Recently, it was vacations with her boys to Monterey and Las Vegas. Family also meant grandchildren and great grandchildren who she loved and adored…Megan, Greer, Hudson, Madison, Colton, Keeley and Kennedy. Her retirement years were dedicated to even more memory making with the coordination of family reunions, recipe collecting and genealogy research in addition to enthusiastically embracing several California Retired Teachers Association leadership roles. Family, family, family. This was Lenore, and this is the legacy she leaves for the upcoming generations to proudly carry in her honor.
A special and heartfelt thank you to the wonderful Skyline Assisted Living staff including all Hospice care providers. Lenore loved you all and would have had just one final request. "A little more red wine, please".
Services will be private when Lenore and her husband, Jim, will be inurned with Honors at a Montana Veteran's Cemetery.

I am so sad about your mother's passing. We worked at Franklin School and later became good friends. Over the years we shared good times going to lunch, shopping and visiting the casino. Your parents joined us one year for Thanksgiving dinner. We laughed, shared family recipes and just had a good time. I will cherish my memories.

My sincere sympathy to Jim and family. We were classmates at Roosevelt and Davis High School. I am sorry for your loss. I was not privileged to work for your mother but knew of her as a highly admired and respected member of the educational community. May you find comfort in knowing she leaves an amazing legacy.

To Mrs. Shively: You were my 7th grade English teacher at La Loma. I want to thank you for believing in me and recommending me to be placed into a higher student academic level at that time. Thank you for inspiring me to realize my academic potential as I eventually graduated from college with honors. Thank you for encouraging me to become a productive, good citizen which I have come to appreciate during a successful career - and now retirement. But most of all I want to thank you for giving me the privilege of being in your presence during those formative years. My deepest condolences to your family. May you rest in eternal peace. Respectfully, Ken Kurita.

I am so sorry to read about Mrs. Shiveley's passing. She is the reason I won the Somerset School (Modesto) naming contest in 1965. She was my English teacher at Sylvan School. The new school was built for 7th and 8th graders. Mrs. Shiveley's assignment was to write a 250-word essay as to what to name the new school in the Sylvan School District. My essay and name won the contest. I'm heartbroken to learn of her passing. She had stayed in touch with me periodically throughout the years. My sympathies are with the family at this time.

Fondly remembered as one of my teachers at La Loma Jr High School, 1967-68. I recall her class was in one of the Quonset huts on the east side of campus. Still working on my English Mrs. Shively!
