Richard Knoles Obituary

RICHARD MERRITT KNOLES FEB 1, 1943 - SEPT. 19, 2007 Rick Knoles went home to be with the Lord on September 19, 2007. He was born on 2/1/1943 in Modesto, California to Leslie and Beatrice Knoles. Rick was the oldest of three children and grew up in Modesto with his brother Tom, and sister Linda. Rick's passion was sports, especially football. He was a quarterback on Downey High School's football team. He also enjoyed track, especially pole- vaulting, and was fortunate enough to run with the Olympic Torch in 1960. Rick served in the US Marine Corps Reserve for six years. He received his AA from Modesto Junior College, and his BA from Fresno State where he met his future wife, Sharon Palmquist. They were married the following year. Two years later, their only child, Kim was born. After graduating, Rick moved his family to Southern California where he received a teaching and coaching position at Channel Islands High School in Oxnard.

Rick was an incredible educator. He truly understood kids and was an advocate for them. Rick's 28-year commitment to AA was the motivating factor for completing his High School Counseling Credential and Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist License. Upon completion of these degrees, Rick was hired as a counselor at Camarillo High School. He also had a private counseling practice for fifteen years and was a true inspiration to his clients. He worked two jobs for many years to fulfill his counseling dreams. Two years before retiring, he transferred to Pacifica High School to help with the opening of the new school.

Rick retired after 32 years with the Oxnard Union High School District. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement and kept busy coaching football, playing Ping-Pong, cooking, playing the guitar and piano, completing daily crosswords, reading, dining, and most of all spending time with his family. Rick had three precious granddaughters, Madison, Marin, and Morgan Lockwood. He enjoyed supporting them in their school, dancing and soccer activities. Rick was an amazing person. He cared for and loved his family immensely. His intense personality was inspired by a gentle, sincere heart. Rick was an extremely fair, honest, and moral man and was highly respected by those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Sharon of 42 years; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Guy Lockwood of Camarillo; granddaughters, Madison, Marin, and Morgan Lockwood; mom, Beatrice Knoles of Modesto; brother and sister-in-Law, Tom and Cecilia Knoles of Modesto; sister and brother-in-Law, Linda and Mike Gianelli of Modesto; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday afternoon, September 27 at 3:30.

Dear Sharon,Kim,Guy,Madison,Marin and Morgan,

Our thoughts and deep prayers are with you at this most difficult time.

So very sorry we couldn't be with you today and I'm especially sad I couldn't speak about Rick. He was a huge part of our successes at A.C.H.S. and was loved deeply. He helped so many, not only students, but parents and staff as well. He gave me wise counsel and never shied from giving his opinions. I respected that greatly.

I remember our last time together and in his great pain he still laughed with us. He gave me strength. I will never forget hugging and kissing his cheek on that last visit.

Hopefully, this will help "Grieve for as long as it takes then remember forever."

Our Love,

Terry and Pat

Mr. Knoles was my counselor at ACHS. I was so sad to hear of his passing. He was there for me when my brother passed away my junior year and without him, I probably wouldn't have graduated. I had never told him how much I apprecited him and what he did for me until one day, he walked into my work with his granddaughter's class for a tour. To know that he is no longer with us, I am so grateful for that day when I had the chance to tell him, "Thank you". To his family, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Rick was a man with a tough outside and a teddy bear heart! His sense of humor was an inspiration. I don't think he realized what an influence he had on those around him. It was a true pleasure to get to know him and work with him for several years at Camarillo High. You'll be in my heart forever!

Rick coached JV football for us at Santa Paula High School in 2005. It was a pleasure to watch he and Coach Taylor work together. They made every one of those kids feel that they were a valued member of the team. Many of those kids are still playing due to Coach. We are grateful to Coach Knoles for his dedication and patience with our players. Ooh Ahh!
I would like to thank his family for sharing him with us - we are better for having known him. He was a source of inspiration and knowledge when he counseled me as my mother prepared for chemotherapy treatments this past spring. God Bless You.

His presence will be greatly missed by many. I enjoyed Rick's humor, caring attitude, teasing comments, and of course, his cooking. He had such a love of God and Jesus, and he wanted to share what he had with many people. My prayers continue for his family.

We got to know Rick in the Fall of 2004. I was coaching his grandaughter's soccer team. He and Sharon would be at every game cheering the kids on. He always had the right thing to say to me at the end of every game.
In the short time that we knew him, we developed a strong bond with him.
Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

I really miss my Poppy. We always had lots of fun. We made lots of jokes. He was the Candy-Man because he would always give us candy after dinner. He was also the tickle monster because he would always tickle me. For my birthday, he would take me to dinner any place I would like to go. He also gave me $100.00. I will always remember my Poppy. I love him as much as counting never stops!(Infinity) Love, Morgan

I am so sad that my grandpa passed away. But, I'm glad that he is not in pain now. I think that he was the best grandpa in the world and I loved him so much. I hope he is doing well in heaven with Jesus. I love you Poppy to the moon and back and more than all of the pieces of sand on the beaches. Love, Marin
