Modesto, California - Robert John Thurman, known as "Bob" to family and friends, passed away on February 18, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was 76 years old.
Bob was born on March 22, 1948, to John Edward Thurman Jr. and Julia Camilla (Forni) Thurman in Modesto, California. He grew up on the family's Holstein dairy farm and attended Hart-Ransom School. He later graduated from Modesto High School in 1966, where he played football and baseball and served as Treasurer of the Future Farmers of America.
Bob earned a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from California State University, Stanislaus, while also serving several years in the Army Reserve. His experience as a drill sergeant helped to shape him into a lifelong leader.
After his military service, Bob took on the responsibility of running Thurman Farms, a legacy passed down from his parents. He dedicated himself to the dairy industry, working tirelessly into his later years and upholding the values of integrity, perseverance, and responsibility that defined his life.
Beyond his lengthy farming career, Bob was known for his deep knowledge, unwavering work ethic, and dedication to his community. He coached youth sports, worked with booster clubs, supported FFA programs, and volunteered to teach English classes. He was also an avid outdoorsman and hunter, finding joy in exploring California's natural beauty.
Above all, Bob cherished his role as a grandfather. He frequently traveled to San Diego to visit his grandsons, Connor and Landon, cheering them on at sports games and musicals, helping with homework, and celebrating special occasions.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Angie Gill; his son, Erik Thurman; his sister, Susan Thurman; his grandsons, Connor and Landon Gill; his son-in-law, Ryland Gill; and his brother-in-law, Peter Necarsulmer. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Janice Thurman.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held in April (details to come). Though his presence and wisdom will be deeply missed, his legacy of hard work, dedication, and service will live on.

Bob was a best friend for 50 years. We once took a 6 foot fake plant, in a sand filled clay pot, out of the lobby of Modesto's Holiday Inn and crammed it into his orange Opal GT. Good Trouble.
