Wayne Edington Obituary

Wayne Wallace Edington

May 14, 1946 - May 1, 2024

Modesto, California - Wayne lived his life the way he played Bridge: he bid slam and made it.

Wayne was born in Washington, D.C. He had a rough childhood. At an early age, Wayne developed a love of reading, an interest in sports and an unflappable demeanor.

Wayne proudly served his country in Vietnam and won enough poker games to buy his high school sweetheart a diamond solitaire engagement ring when he came home. Wayne and Chris had two daughters, Nicole and Deena. The family moved across the country to North Hollywood, California when a job promotion was offered. Wayne was a quiet and calm father who enjoyed playing board games with his girls as well as attending their softball games, volleyball games and track meets. He was patient and always had a paperback book in his hand just in case there was time to read. In his late twenties, Wayne became a great tennis player and began his lifelong love affair with Bridge. He became an enthusiastic (but not very good) golfer. Wayne loved to vacation in Hawaii. During one family trip, a game of Spoons got a little too loud and other guests called hotel security. The family played Scrabble on subsequent vacations.

Wayne began a new chapter in 2018 when he moved from Los Angeles to Modesto to be near his daughter Nicole and her family. "Gran" loved watching his grandsons play sports and having a Risk tournament on a lazy Sunday. His Nook had over 1,200 novels, and he was working his way through them. While teaching Bridge through an MJC program for seniors, Wayne fell in love with one of his students, Patricia Hitch. He marveled that he could feel like a teenager in his 70s. Wayne and Pat were able to enjoy nearly five years together.

Thank you to the nurses, doctors and ICU staff at Memorial Medical Center for your excellent and compassionate care of Wayne the last two months of his life.

Wayne is survived by daughters Nicole (Eric) and Deena (Matthew) and grandchildren Zack, Charlie, Sophie, Alan and James. The family will have a private Celebration of Life.
