MATTHEW JOSEPH HASSETT
Matthew Joseph Hassett, age 79, passed away on Weds., January 27, 2021. Matt was born in Philadelphia to Dorothy and Daniel Hassett, their fourth of five sons, on his father's birthday July 21.
The family moved to Southern California when Matt was 11 years old and after graduating from Saint Monica's High School he joined the US Army. At Fort Bragg North Carolina Matt met the love of his life, Janet, they were married and moved to Southern California. Matt pursued a career in computers and management working for the US Postal Service and a number of other companies, where he had a crucial role in a zip + 4 and Y2K computer fixes. Matt and Janet retired in Bullhead City, Arizona in 2004 and enjoyed the desert life. They were married 58 years.
During his years, he formed deep connections and was devoted to his family, Catholic faith and sobriety. Matt spent most of his life connecting and enjoying his wife, children, mother, father, brothers, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, going to church and saying the rosary. In addition to these devotions, he would be found at Starbucks getting a coffee (any time of day or night), watching sports (any sport!), shopping for electronics or helping a friend. Matt was a person who could connect with anyone as an attentive listener and with a great sense of humor but also often telling a story or giving advice that was just what was needed at the time. His group texts with words of wisdom and email jokes will be sorely missed and will leave a hole in our lives. Matt embraced the values of living a life of honesty, integrity, loving his family and friends and having fun.
Matt is survived by his wife, Jan; children, Matt (Sherry), Theresa (Arty), and Mike; brother, John (Lucy); sisters-in-law, Rene, Pat and Linda; grandchildren, Samantha (Daniel), Lucas, Paul and Joel.
Due to COVID, the celebration of Matt's life will be held around his 80th birthday in CA. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Our Lady of Loretto in Novato, CA.
