Alvin Thompson Obituary

Resident of Salinas
Alvin A. Thompson passed away peacefully at home in Salinas, CA, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 1, 1924 in Churchton, MD to Archie Thompson and Ruth Jenkins Thompson, the oldest son in a family of 10 children. He grew up in Baltimore, and enlisted in the US Army in June 1943. In the Philippine Islands he met his wife-to-be, Pilar Decatoria from Leyte. He and Pilar married in Manila in May 1947. Alvin became a career soldier assigned to military bases world wide, including Viet Nam. He retired in 1968. His second career was with the US Postal Service in Monterey until 1986. In 1970 he embraced the faith of the local Jehovah Witness organization. Over the next 47 years he found great satisfaction and joy in his faith and being of service. He was known for his humble gentle manner, his generosity and kindness.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Pilar D. Thompson; daughters Pilar Binyon of Bonney Lake, WA, and Carmen DeVida of Pacific Grove, CA; grandson Darren Thompson of Oakland, CA; and great-grandson Gabriel Bergstedt of Gottland, Sweden. Siblings Clement Thompson, Dolores Scipio, Anna Drake, Shirley Boyd and Minerva Thompson reside in Maryland. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Marina Kingdom Hall, 3319 Abdy Way.
