John Sitar Obituary

John Donald Sitar April 20, 1918 - June 18, 2004 Marina - John Donald Sitar, 86 of Marina died Friday, June 18 at Hospice House in Monterey. He was born in Cleveland, OH and attended Holy Name High School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1937, and first came to the Monterey Peninsula in 1958 when he was assigned to duty at Fort Ord. During WWII, he served with the 1st Armored Division in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He also served in Korea, and Vietnam before retiring from active duty in 1971. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (1st and 2nd Award), and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his daughter Peggy Schnars, and his first wife, Patricia. He is survived by his loving wife Kay, a son Tim Sitar of Marina, a daughter Regina Anich of Seaside, three step sons Paul Andrich, Steve Andrich, and Allen Andrich, all of Marina, a step daughter Angeleke Durham of Salinas, one grandson Chris Anich of Seaside, six step-grandchildren Louise Andrich (Seaside), Alex Andrich (Marina), Amanda Andrich (Marina), Jared Andrich (Marina), Jessica Andrich (Seaside), and Michael Beasley (Marina). John enjoyed studying military history, contributing to his favorite charities, and spending time with friends and loved ones. Visitation, followed by a rosary, will be held at Mission Mortuary El Estero in Monterey on Wednesday from 4 pm to 7 pm. A mass will be held Thursday at 10am at St. Jude's Parish in Marina. Burial for Mr. Sitar will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on July 13. Donations in John's name may be made to Hospice of the Central Coast, Palma High School, and Holy Name High School in Parma Heights, OH.
