Michael Albov Obituary

Michael Alex Albov
April 11, 1949 - April 18, 2015
Monterey
Michael Alex Albov died on April 18 in Monterey, California after a brief illness. A Monterey Peninsula native, he was born in Carmel, California on April 11, 1949, to Alexander and Tekla Albov. Michael grew up in Pacific Grove and was a graduate of Pacific Grove High School. He attended the University of California at Santa Cruz where he received his Bachelor's degree in history with honors in 1972. He participated in the first student exchange program with the all African-American Tougaloo College in Mississippi in 1969 during a period of profound social change and societal unrest. Following that, he attended the University of California at Davis where he received his Juris Doctor in 1976. After a year as an appointed Patients' Rights Counsel for the State of California. He returned to Monterey where he joined the law firm of Hudson Martin Ferrante & Street (now Hudson Martin Ferrante Street Witten & DeMaria) where he practiced for 37 years.
In his professional career, Michael represented major projects that saved valuable resources on the Peninsula including helping draft key protection for the Sand City coastline in its fully approved coastal plan, represented CTB- McGraw Hill at Ryan Ranch, the LEED certified Trader Joe's project in Monterey, the Lighthouse Cinemas in Pacific Grove and recently, as part of his passion for history and historic resource accessibility to the public, provided counsel to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in connection with the renewal of the Cooper Molera Adobe as a community centerpiece.
Michael was deeply involved in local non-profits. He served as President of several organizations including Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula during its capital campaign to build the Sally Griffin Active Living Center, Legal Services for Seniors, and the Ombudsman program in Monterey County. Twice he was named Volunteer of the Year, once by the Volunteer Center of the United Way of Monterey Country, and another by Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula. In addition to his charitable endeavors, Michael was President and CEO for 20 years of Flaherty's Seafood Grill and Oyster Bar in Carmel.
Michael was a serial hobbyist from his first home built stereo system to his vast record collection. He was an accomplished fine art and entertainment photographer which led to photographs appearing on numerous news sites and in private collections. An avid believer in constitutional protections, he was an Endowment member of the NRA and enjoyed target shooting. Michael was also an amateur radio operator (KC6TUV) and served on Eagle Scout Boards of Review. His passion for cars included owning and restoring GTOs from the mid-sixties, as well as driving and enjoying Corvettes.
Michael married Elizabeth Ann Krylow in 1978 and in 1984 they welcomed their daughter, Sophia Elizabeth into their family.
His loving family mourns his passing and invites his friends and associates to join them at a memorial service on Sunday, May 31 from 2-5 p.m. at the Sally Griffin Active Living Center (700 Jewel Ave., Pacific Grove, CA 93950). In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula or to the donor's favorite charity to honor Michael's memory.

I was fortunate to have known Michael and his fondness for all things yellow (Cars, Driving Shoes etc. We first met online in the Corvette Forum in 2001 as Mike organized a Corvette Corral at the Monterey Historic Races which became an annual event until Mike's passing and some years transcended the races with purely social meetings a few at his Restaurant, Flahertys. Mike was responsible for bringing together a diverse group of folks from all over the West Coast that are still connected as "The Usual Suspects". Mike also shared my passion for music and love of vinyl. He was affectionately known as Mike Goat. My life has been enriched having known him...

To Michael's family and friends
I did not know Michael personally, but, like many others, knew him through the Steve Hoffman forum. Through his sharing of his "USCC Dorm Tape", I felt the presence of a kind and eloquent man, who shared a renewed excitement around his mystery recording. Its been many years but the mystery singer has been identified! Michael provided a unique and beautiful gift to the world. Thank you sir. Sending much love to all family and friends.

I did not know Michael Albov, but only knew his parents. I met Alex Albov while I attended an intensive Russian language camp at University of San Diego in LA Jolla in 1971. In 1972 I graduated from ASU with a BA degree in Russian. I married the same year to Alex EFIMENKO. When we had our 1st child in 1975, Tekla became our daughters Godmother. We visited their home in Pacific Grove a couple of times, where I tasted Tekla's perhoshky and sorrel soup. I still make these things for my family and remember our times together. I'm so sorry that Michael died. Condolences to his wife and daughter.

I did not know Michael Alexander Albov, but I met his father, Alex Alvov in 1971 at an intensive Russian language camp at University of Sandie in LA Jolla. We had some conversations about his experiences in Yugoslavia since I had just been there for 3 weeks. The next year I married my husband, Alex Efimenko and when we had our 1st child in 1975, I asked Tekla to be her Godmother. We did visit a couple of times. I made Tekla's recipe for peroshky and sorrel soup which she served to me on one of my visits to their home. I wish I had gotten acquainted with their son Michael and granddaughter Sophia, whom I heard about from Tekla. May Elizabeth and Sophia continue happy, healthy lives. From Kristina Efimenko

I was very sorry to hear of Michael's passing. I worked for him in 1978 when my husband was stationed at Fort Ord. I was a young legal secretary and I will never forget his patience and kindness during the short time I worked for him. I am visiting the Monterey Peninsula this week and had planned to stop by and visit, even though he probably would not have remembered me. I was saddened and shocked to see his obituary.
My prayers and condolences to his family. You have lost a kind and gentle man but I hope your good memories with him will make you smile.

I came across Mike's obituary yesterday and passed the word to some of his online acquaintances. We are all saddened. There were many of us trying to help him locate his mystery folk singer that he recorded at Cowell College back in 1967. I met him up at the campus last year to talk about it and was dazzled by the breadth of his experience. We are resolved to continue Mike's quest and honor his memory.

Mike was an altruist, the most caring attorney I ever worked for, the only attorney I worked for who made house calls. His wings were earned long before his passing.

I am so sorry to hear about Mike's death. I remember him as a kid about 6 years old --very cute, and I also remember his parents very well. My parents taught Russian at the Language School at the same time as Mike's father; in later years, Mike became my mother's lawyer and I always found him to be very helpful and knowledgable. My condolences go out to the family. Mary Gordon Carroll

One of the most selfless human beings I've ever met and a heck of a nice guy and friend. Always enjoyed spending time with Mike at The Historics and Pacific Grove Rally during that weekend.

I will always treasure my time with Mike...

So warm...So caring...Such a GOOD friend to so many...

I am still finding it hard to believe he has left us so early in his rich, full life...

Devoted husband and loving Father, I recall the look in his eyes as he would tell a tale about Sophie and what she had done recently...Together, he and Liz nurtured a daughter who has blossomed into a full flower of wonderful joy...

Plan to attend his celebration of LIFE...for Mike will always live on in my mind AND in my heart...

We have lost a GOOD one...

I am lucky to have known him. He changed the lives of so many, not just through charity but by taking an interest in what will really impact each individual he met. That is unique, he is a blessing
