Michel Nasr
May 23, 1924 - April 1, 2022
Pacific Grove
Michel Nasr passed away at home in Pacific Grove on April 1, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Michel was born on May 23, 1924 in Kelhat, Koura, Lebanon. After graduation from Tripoli High School, he earned a B.A. degree in chemistry from the American University of Beirut and began teaching math and science in northern Lebanon. While there Michel was introduced to an American, Elizabeth Roene Johnston, just hours after she had arrived for an overseas mission assignment to teach at Tripoli Girls School. Michel and Roene were married a year later, in December 1962. They made their home in Kelhat and continued to teach in Lebanese high schools. When civil war forced the Nasrs to leave Lebanon in 1976, Michel found work as an instructor of Arabic at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey. Uncertain at first about the change of subject matter, Michel soon discovered that what he loved was teaching, and the subject matter was irrelevant. While at the DLI Michel completed a master's degree in teaching foreign language (MATFL) at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. He retired from the DLI in 1998. Michel enjoyed reading, fishing, walking along the shore, gardening (especially planting olive trees in his backyard), and playing duplicate bridge. He was a member of the American Contract Bridge League, which awarded him the rank of Sapphire Life Master in May 2017. He was a president of the Monterey Arab-American Club. He served two terms as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Monterey. Michel's students describe him as a mentor and role model, a gifted teacher, upright, considerate, caring and kind. Friends and family recall his hospitality and generosity, his gift for storytelling, his sense of humor and zest for life. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Roene, his sister Souad of Beirut, and numerous god-children, nieces and nephews. A service celebrating Michel's life will be held at 2 PM Friday, May 20th at First Presbyterian Church of Monterey. Donations in memory of Michel Nasr can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Monterey.
