Robert Uehling Obituary

Robert (Bob) Uehling
September 2, 1948 ~ May 15, 2017
Monterey, CA
Bob Uehling passed away on Monday morning, May 15, surrounded by his children, cousin, brother-in-law and wife. Robert Henry Uehling was in born Evanston, IL. Raised in Madison, WI, along with his brother, Rick, he was a proud son of Robert Oscar Uehling, a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and Clerk of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and Dorothy Louise Knauss Uehling.
Bob graduated from Madison West High School, and Ripon College, where he was a member of the ROTC and Delta Upsilon fraternity. After his graduation in 1970, he served his country at a Nike Hercules Base in Anchorage, AK. After a transfer to Fort Jackson, SC, Bob met and married the former Susan Roth, with whom he had three children, Michael Robert, Mitchell Louis and Katherine (Katie) Louise.
Bob pursued higher education, receiving his Juris Doctorate and Masters in Accounting from University of South Carolina, and a Masters of Laws from Emory University. He was a tax attorney for South Carolina Electric & Gas, while serving in the US Army Reserve. In 2001, Bob moved to California to accept a position with Knight Ridder in San Jose, CA, to be closer to his only brother, Rick. Bob later went on to be a tax attorney for West Marine Co., and Granite Construction Inc. in Watsonville.
In 2003, Bob's brother Rick set him up on a blind date with Kathleen (Kitty) Nevin of Monterey. The couple was married in 2005, and enjoyed a fun-filled and loving relationship, celebrating 12 happy years of marriage on May 14.
Bob was a lifelong sports enthusiast and athlete, who ran seven marathons, and was an avid golfer and tennis player. Even during his treatment for cancer, he was proud to report to his doctors that he was maintaining his exercise regimen of 10,000 steps each day. He was a long-time volunteer Marshall at the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, as well as the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach. Bob will be remembered for his friendly nature — he truly never met anyone he didn't like — for his humor and his "Bobisms": "disiflexia," when you can't remember the order of things; "epicurean," more than one eucalyptus tree; I just joined "Spacebook"; "mental tilapia," two people thinking of the same idea at the same time.
Bob is survived by his wife Kitty of Monterey, his brother Rick and his partner Garrett of San Francisco; son Mike, daughter-in-law Kelly Blaine and grandsons Cooper and Griffin of Newnan, GA; son Mitch, daughter-in-law Stephanie, and granddaughter Delaney of Columbia, SC; and daughter Katie and son-in-law Brian Fessler of Charleston, SC, his aunt and uncle, Marge and Retired US Congressman Roger Zion of Evansville, IN, and cousins in Napa, Alabama, Tennessee, and Las Vegas, and his extended Nevin family in California, and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 146 12th Street, Pacific Grove, on Monday, May 22, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception at the church. At 2:00 p.m., an inurnment ceremony, with Military Funeral Honors, will take place at the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery at the former Fort Ord (2900 Parker Flats Road, Seaside). Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Dorothy Knauss Uehling Scholarship Fund at Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, P.O. Box 6457 – Dept. #291, Indianapolis, IN 46206, or the Ripon College Annual Fund, P.O. Box 248, Ripon, WI 54971.

Still think about you every day, miss our fun loving conversations late at night, talking college baseball, football, fantasy sports, and just all about the busy activities he and Kitty were doing together. Dad loved to play tennis, go on walks with Buddy and Pumpkin and run in road races. Mike and I, will be competing in our 2nd Panama Beach 70.3 Ironman and will be looking up at you and counting on your encouragement to get through this grueling competition.

Love and miss your kind soul, funny humor and competitiveness in all you did. I try and live life with passion everyday as you showed us all with your big heart, how to lift others up, love life and share happiness!

Your loving son,
Mitch

I just found out about Mr. Uehling passing away. I worked for him as a runner and receptionist in Columbia, SC during the mid-1980s for two years. I was 17 when I started. Mr. Uehling was so nice, all the time. He is the reason I became a lawyer. I vividly remember that one time a client called in, upset that he had paid off his mortgage but the lender would not issue a satisfaction of the lien. Mr. Uehling told me to look up so-and-so statute, which contained the penalties for failing to timely issue a satisfaction. He knew the statute number off the top of his head. He then wrote a letter to the lender and the satisfaction was issued in days. I thought it was so cool how he knew just what to do to help the client. That's when I decided to go to law school. My condolences to his family. He was a wonderful man.

I worked with Bob, through the years, at the AT&T Pro-Am. We were friends and fellow marshals. Invariably we find ourselves in unique and difficult situations requiring on the fly remedies. Sometimes these "solutions" are a little beyond what a volunteer should have to do or put up with. Bob was a guy that would say, "No, I'll do it", always more than holding down his spots in the rotations. I'll remember him as loyal, dedicated, and dependable; a gentle man with a tough inner resolve. I wish he was coming back.

Sad to hear this Katie and Susan. Loved reading his obituary. My dad was raised in Madison, Wis. as well and came to Fort Jackson, met and married my mom during WWII. Hugs to you both. Love, Jan Kelly
