Alvin Dees Obituary

Alvin Howard Dees, Jr.

Montgomery - Dees, Alvin Howard, Jr., of Montgomery, Alabama passed away on January 24, 2021. Al is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Debbie; daughter, Courtney Dees King (Matt) of Birmingham, Alabama; son, Stephen Parrish Dees (Anna) of Montgomery, Alabama; sister, Marilyn Dees Bennett of Louisville, Alabama. Al (Big Dad) is also survived by his four grandchildren whom he loved and adored, Preston King and Zac King of Birmingham, Alabama; and Parrish Dees and Walker Dees of Montgomery, Alabama. Al was preceded in death by his parents Alvin Howard, Sr. and Hermie Dees. Al was born in Evergreen, Alabama on January 11, 1947. He was a graduate of Evergreen High School where he was an outstanding football player. He went on to play football at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga before transferring to Troy University. At Troy, he was a member of the 1968 NAIA National Championship football team and forged lifelong friendships with his teammates who he considered brothers. Upon graduation, he set out on a 52 year career in the insurance business. Much of that career was spent with Alfa Insurance where he was serving as Executive Vice President of Marketing at the time of his death. He was grateful for his Alfa family and all of the friendships he developed during his career. Al was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Montgomery where he served on a number of boards and committees. He was also an active member of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and served in a variety of leadership roles. Al was a loyal supporter of Troy University where he was appointed to the Board of Trustees and named Alumnus of the year. Al was a compassionate and humble leader. His caring, affable demeanor made him fast friends with all that had the pleasure of meeting him. Due to concerns associated with the Covid-19 pandemic, a private family service will be held at First United Methodist Church. An email account has been set up for friends to share their condolences and memories of Al: [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First United Methodist Church Montgomery, 2416 West Cloverdale Park, Montgomery AL 36106, The HANDS Program (thehandsprogram.org) 300 Shadow Wood Park Suite 100, Birmingham AL 35244, or the charity of your choice.

Debbie, we are so sorry to hear about Al's passing. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your family. Al was such an inspiration! He was a great ambassador for Troy University, Delta Chi Fraternity, the City of Montgomery and certainly his working career with multiple companies. He was successful at everything and every organization he was involved in--a true winner! We are all better for having known Al! Our sincere condolences!

Al was one of the most friendly people I've ever know. Famous for his "athlete humor", Al was a regular at Panera Bread where many of us gathered for breakfast, and he always had a one-liner or a "zinger" for those of us brave enough to start something. He & I had a standing joke about Indonesian Coffee (google that to get the background of the story) . I would always tell him I had some on order for him, and he'd answer, "Order some extra, I have a few friends I want to give some to". I finally did order it, but covid hit & we didn't see each other again. Al will be missed for the outstanding person he was, his sense of humor, and because so few like him are left in today's world. RIP Al from all of the Panera crowd.

Alvin Dees was one of the finest gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure to know. He conducted himself with strength and dignity at all times, and I was always proud of the way he represented the alumni body of Troy University. On behalf of the larger Troy University family, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Debbie and the family. Alvin Dees was a true Trojan, and his alma mater will miss him!
