George H. Morris

Montgomery - George H. Morris, 81, of Montgomery, Alabama passed away on March 28, 2020 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patsy Simmons Morris, his son Scott Morris (Stephanie), and grandson Geoffrey Morris. He is preceded in death by his mother Iva Johns Morris, father William Benjamin Morris, and brother Dr. Harwell Morris.

He was born on June 7, 1938 in Selma, Alabama. He was a graduate of Albert G. Parrish High School, Class of 1956. He attended Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo) before enlisting and serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959. After his discharge from the Marines he returned to Selma where he met the love of his life and future bride, Patsy. They married a year later in 1960. Soon after he returned to school to finish his degree at Livingston State College (now the University of West Alabama). After graduation he joined Exxon as part of their sales team and moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee. During his career in sales he worked for Cummins Engine Company, Ford Motor Company, and Farmers Insurance Group.

After retiring he and Patsy moved to Montgomery, Alabama to be closer to their family. He started a small business selling supplies to automobile dealers and was a regular on Thursdays at the Auto Auction of Montgomery. He enjoyed shooting and working on old military firearms and helped run Civilian Marksmanship Program matches held at the Central Alabama Gun Club. George was also an active member of the Montgomery Quarterback Club. He also loved spending time with his granddog Heidi.

George was a patriot and was passionate about helping service members and veterans. He served in the Alabama State Guard and was an Ombudsman for the Department of Defense Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve program. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, serving as Commandant of the local Townsend Detachment and as State Commandant for Alabama.

A memorial service will be held at Vaughn Park Church of Christ on Friday, June 19th at 11:00am. Interment with military honors will be held at a later date at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the USO, PO Box 96860, Washington, DC 20090-6860.
