Julie Shashy Obituary

Shashy, Julie Scott

Julie Scott Shashy, 66, a long-time resident of Montgomery, died Saturday October 14, after a courageous fight with cancer.

Born and raised in Birmingham by her parents, Dr. Walter and Nell Bargeron Scott, Julie attended Brooke Hill School (now Altamont) before graduating from the University of Alabama in 1973. She later earned a master's degree in education from UAB. After teaching school for a time and raising her boys, she was employed at the Montgomery County Board of Registrars.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 35 years: Judge William A. Shashy; three sons: William A. Shashy Jr., John Charlton Shashy and his wife, DeeDee Everitt Shashy, and Paul Scott Shashy and a large contingent of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Rev. Francis Sophie will conduct funeral services Tuesday October 17, at 1 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. After services, the family will receive friends at home.

Pallbearers will be John Crawford Freeman, Craig Peacock, Miland Simpler, Tripp Swann, Ellis Terry and Robert Wool.

A gifted gardener and an ardent reader, Julie was active in her church and with those who shared her love of the game of bridge. She was a "spitfire who loved life" and was unparalleled in her devotion to her family, who often heard her quote the old French phrase: "C'est la vie!"

The family is especially appreciative of the care of Dr. Marty Heslin and the nursing staff at UAB Hospital's Surgical Intensive Care Unit. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Julie's name to: Mental Health America in Montgomery, 1116 South Hull St., Montgomery, Ala., 36104.

"Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance."

Dear Paul, I am so sorry to learn of your mother's passing. She was always so kind to me and beautiful inside and out. It was easy to see "the apple didn't fall far from the tree." Of all the years I taught, you were one of my favorites, but your mom was my favorite. Please accept my sincere condolence.
