Linda Gill Obituary

Aug. 5, 1946-Sept. 13, 2014

Linda Carter Gill, longtime organist and assistant director of music at First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, died Saturday, Sept. 13 after a brief illness. She had been a prominent figure among church musicians for well over four decades, serving nine churches as organist (often serving as director of music or associate director of music as well). Long active in the American Guild of Organists, she had served as Dean of the AGO in Birmingham and as chair of the Regional AGO Convention in Birmingham in 1997. She had served as director of the Montgomery Chorale and of the Montgomery Master Singers.

Her driving passion was her family, and she leaves behind her husband of 46 years, Wayne Gill; her son, Steven Gill, Birmingham, and wife Cara Gill; her daughter, Susan Gill Thomas, of Montgomery, and husband, Lowell Thomas; six grandchildren, Carter Gill, Julia Gill and Rosemary Gill, of Birmingham; and Grant Weedon, Garrett Weedon, and Jackson Thomas of Montgomery; a sister, Anne Carter Bennett, Alabaster, and a brother, Carl Carter, Birmingham.

A Birmingham native, she graduated from Minnie Holman Elementary and Woodlawn High School (1964), obtaining her BS-Music from Birmingham-Southern College in 1968. She received Master's Degrees in Choral Conducting and Organ Performance from the University of Alabama. During her long career, she served as organist at Woodlawn Baptist Church, Birmingham (now Liberty Park Baptist); First Baptist - Auburn; First United Methodist - South Hill, Va.; Vestavia Hills United Methodist; Sandy Springs United Methodist, Atlanta; Saint Andrew's Episcopal, Birmingham; East Lake United Methodist, Birmingham; and First United Methodist Montgomery.

The family will receive guests beginning at 12:30 Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Montgomery, with music and the celebration of life beginning at 1:30. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Linda Gill Cathedral Pipe Organ Fund, c/o First United Methodist Church Montgomery, 2416 West Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, Ala., 35106.

Dear Wayne, I wonder if you might remember me from your years in South Hill, Virginia. I was one of many kids associated with the Methodist Church where you and Linda organized wonderful musical programs that we'd take on the road. I remember you both so very fondly. I also sang in the choir, and I was always an admirer of your rich baritone voice and Linda's wonderful orchestrations. I was just reminiscing with some old friends from South Hill and wondered if I might find you online. I searched, and I was so sad to hear of Linda's passing. You both touched so many lives in South Hill, and I always remember you when I visit South Hill and drive by the Methodist Church or your old house. I hope this note finds its way to you somehow, and that you'll accept my sincere condolences for Linda's passing. Sincerely, Dr. Keith Crowder, University of Washington, Seattle

My mother, Mrs D.B. Neuhauser, was a long-time member of FUMC, Montgomery, and sang in the choir. She spoke to me often of Linda with great fondness and admiration. "Blessed are the dead who die in The Lord."

Dear Wayne, if I'm not mistaken, you are the son of Houston and Ruth Gill, our dear friends from Argo Presbyterian church. They would talk about you and Linda and the children. We pray God's peace and comfort to each of you in the form of memories to treasure.

I always planned to go back and play bells with Linda again. Now it will never happen. It is nearly impossible to imagine Sunday without Linda. My heart aches for your loss - and for ours.

To all Linda's family and friends, I send my prayers, my love and my sincere sympathy. Linda never ceased to amaze me. Her musical talents were enjoyed and loved by so many people both near and far. Though we didn't really get to know each other well until college I loved and admired Linda very much. Linda was my cousin, my friend in college and my organist at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. I know how important family and friends were to Linda. And she was loved greatly by all who knew her. Linda gifted us all with her love, her caring and with her always beautiful music. What a wonderful addition she will make to Heaven's musical angels!!
