Richard Shepherd Obituary
Richard Logan Shepherd, a WWII Veteran and a long time resident of Montgomery, died during the early morning hours of March 27, 2013. He was predeceased in death by his beloved mother, Grace Stahl Shepherd, his father Perry L. Shepherd, and his sister Alice Cathran. Shepherd was a devoted son and spent his life caring for his mother after his father's untimely death. He loved his country and was most proud of his service and accomplishments while serving in the US Army from 1943 to 1946. He was a rifleman on the front lines during the Battle of the Philippine Islands. He was injured by shrapnel on April 17, 1945, as he and his squad fought to liberate the Philippine Islands from the Japanese invasion. For his service, Shepherd received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Army Occupation Medal; two Bronze Stars; a Good Conduct Medal; and a Purple Heart Medal --- all of which he was awarded some 57 years after his service at a special ceremony here in Montgomery.
Shepherd was born in Illinois, but spent most of his 89 years of life here in Alabama. After he graduated from Sidney Lanier High School, he worked as a land surveyor for the State for a few years. Later, he attended college and Jones School of Law on the Faulkner University campus. After graduating from law school, he worked as a research lawyer for other lawyers. His knowledge of the law and history was vast.
Shepherd was fondly known in Montgomery as "The Walker" because he never drove a car but walked where he needed to go. He was a true Southern gentleman, who enjoyed spending his time reading, talking politics and history with his friends at Eastdale Estates, and taking long drives throughout the City with his dear and long time friends Charles and Jeanette Graves. Shepherd will be missed by many. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, 2013 from 1:00 - 2:00 at White Chapel Greenwood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm with Rev. John Gaines officiating. Burial will be at Montgomery Memorial Cemetery with military honors.

I met Mr. Shepherd several years ago through our daughter Donna Cox. We invited him to our Thanksgiving dinners, and really looked forward for him coming each year. HE was a fine gentleman and he will really be missed.

I first met Mr. Shepherd in 2006 and he was by far the finest gentleman I have ever met. I will miss his weekly calls and history lessons. We will miss having him at our Thanksgiving dinners. He was like part of our family and we all will miss him greatly. May you rest in peace my very special friend until we meet again!

My husband and I have wonderful memories of Richard over the last year. We had some great "road trips" in my new car around town - he loved a new car! What a gentleman! Jackie & Lee Berry

Mr Shepherd was a fine man. Very astute and giving. I met him 20 years ago when he walked in my office downtown. He always wanted to know if I was exercising, tell me about how far he had walked. Often would take any new car I purchased by to show him. He would hop right in for a ride. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Mr. Shepherd was a true gentleman. I always enjoyed seeing him when he attended the alumni events at the law school. He will be missed.
