Elvin R. SOUDER

ELVIN R. SOUDER April 9, 1918 - November 18, 2012 Elvin R. Souder died Sunday, November 18, at Lehigh Valley Hospital after a brief illness. He was 94. Mr. Souder was born on April 9, 1918 in his home on Walnut St in Souderton. He was a graduate of Souderton High School ('35), Swarthmore College ('39) and University of Pennsylvania Law School ('42). Following law school, he did his alternative service during WWII with the Mennonite Central Committee helping Russian Mennonites in Paraguay. Upon his return, he practiced law on East Broad St in Souderton from 1947 until his retirement in 2006. Mr. Souder was very active in the community. He served on the board of Zion Mennonite Church and he served on the board of Dock Woods Community. He was a founding board member of Penn Foundation. He also served as the Souderton Borough Solicitor from 1954 to 2006 and was a director of Union National Bank. He was part owner of the family's business, a retail fabric store, The Souder Store, in Souderton. He was predeceased by his wife, Esther "Patty" Souder, in 2000. They had been married 59 years. He is also predeceased by two brothers: Dr. Francis Souder in 2007 and Dr. Lawrence Souder in 2008. Mr. Souder is survived by two daughters: Jane Souder Loose and her husband, John Loose of Nantucket, MA and Louise Patterson Limbert and her husband, Paul Limbert, of Wheeling, WV and four grandchildren: Tom Loose, Steve Loose, Susan McCardle and Mike Limbert, as well as, nine great grandchildren. A celebration of his remarkable life will be on Saturday, November 24, at 11:00 AM at Zion Mennonite Church in Souderton followed by a time to greet the family.
