Loyal Hopkins Obituary

Loyal Alma Hopkins, 97, died peacefully of conditions relating to old age, early Sunday morning, November 2, 2025, at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier, Idaho. Loyal was born July 30, 1928, to Alma Reber Hopkins and Myrintha Tolman Hopkins in Soda Springs, Idaho.

Loyal was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother: Leora Peterson Hopkins Peck, Marva Hopkins Christman, Esther Hopkins Loveless Stoddard, Phyllis Hopkins Giles, Fern Hopkins Nelsen, and Clifford Tolman Hopkins. He was also preceded in death by his dear wife, Barbara Fay Sizemore Hopkins, who passed away on January 23, 2016.

Loyal and Barbara Hopkins are survived by their five children: Mark Loyal (Rhoda-deceased) Hopkins, Terry Lee (Nancy) Hopkins, Trudy (Larry) Hemmert, Peggy (Alan- deceased) Pugmire, and Ranae (Kent) Galloway. They leave behind a legacy of 32 grandchildren, 114 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Loyal was the third of seven children and grew up in Soda Springs, where he developed a love for the outdoors and a knack for fixing things. A childhood bike accident left him on crutches for a year. His father ran sheep, and Loyal spent many days trailing flocks and serving as "Camp Jack," experiences that shaped his deep connection to the land.

At age 17, his father purchased a farm east of Soda Springs, sparking Loyal's lifelong passion for agriculture. He graduated from high school in 1947 and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Fay Sizemore, that same year in the Logan Temple. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and hard work.

In 1951, Loyal and Barbara purchased his father's farm with his sister Marva and her husband Albert Christman. Their partnership thrived for 34 years, earning them recognition such as the "Grass-Man of the Year" award in 1956. Loyal was known for his innovation in farming, especially in custom work with a No-Till Drill, and for his love of learning new techniques.

In 1975, the family moved to Pingree, Idaho, where Loyal continued farming alongside his son Terry. Even after retiring, Loyal remained active-studying health and nutrition, gardening with Barbara, and working in his woodshop. He was still building cabinets with his grandson Benjamin in Pocatello well into his later years.

Loyal and Barbara were devoted members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They served three missions, including two in Nauvoo, Illinois, and one at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City. They also served as ordinance workers in the Idaho Falls Temple for over a decade. Their faith was a cornerstone of their lives, and they were blessed to see many of their grandchildren serve missions.

In his many lonely years following the death of his beloved wife Barbara, Loyal was blessed to meet and marry Marilyn Jensen Lindley March 7, 2020. They were blessed to be together during the sequestered years of Covid-19. Marilyn passed away December 2, 2021.

Loyal will be remembered for his tireless work ethic, his love of the outdoors, his devotion to family, and his unwavering faith. His life was a testament to service, resilience, and joy in simple things.

Funeral services will be held on November 7, 2025, at the LDS Chapel on 109 S Main Street, Paris Idaho at 11:00 AM. (details-WWW.matthewsmortuaryinc.com)

You all were the best neighbors growing up in Soda Springs. We had many many good times and I loved riding Bluey and Brownie. Those days will never leave my heart. I am going to write my story and your family will be a big part of it. Your mom and dad lived very busy full lives and I will always remember their dedication to living. God Bless each of you as your Dad is joined with your Mom.
