J. Stuart Krebs Obituary

J. Stuart Krebs
October 28, 1934 - June 5, 2025
Timing is everything and (John) Stuart Krebs was lucky enough to be born at a time (1934) and place (Montrose, CO) when most of the things that were important to him were possible. As a youth, helping with friends' sheep camps, he was able to act on his lifelong love of nature and mountains.
He attended CU in Boulder, got a degree in engineering and a commission in ROTC which sent him to Germany for two years during the cold war where he was a Company Commander. When he was mustered out of the army, he spent a year in Europe traveling, skiing, climbing and learning to speak German.
Returning to the US, he met Barbara Nagel on a Junior Colorado Mountain Club climb of Blanca Peak. They were married in 1961 - the year they paddled kayaks through Glen Canyon (now under Lake Powell).
As a couple they bought a VW beetle and drove from Europe to Pakistan to meet Peace Corps friends and climb in the Hindu Kush mountains. Returning to Europe they drove through the Middle East and, once again due to lucky timing, were able to see the giant Buddha statues in Afghanistan (now destroyed), visit Iran and the Holy Lands not yet a part of Israel.
Back in Colorado, in graduate school, they went to Chile to help with a geography land-use project. Eighteen months later they drove home through South and Central America (10,000 miles from Santiago, Chile to Montrose, Colorado), finished a PhD in Geography, then taught at CSU in Ft Collins for 15 years. During that time two sons were born, and the couple built a passive solar house.
In 1980 he resigned from CSU and moved back to Montrose where he engaged in community projects such as Montrose Downtown, Western Colorado Congress, Uncompahgre Valley Association, Public Lands Partnership, Valley Food Partnership, Time Bank of the Rockies, Great Decisions Discussions, and Friends of the Himalayas, built a second passive solar house, and raised goats.
He continued adventuring - climbing volcanos in Mexico, Mt Foraker (next to Mt Denali in Alaska), cross country skiing into huts, paddling kayaks through the Grand Canyon and other rivers in the west. He took the entire family on a section of the Churchill River in Canada, and in his later years took annual blackberry picking, ocean paddling trips.
He was always ready to help friends get out into nature - or to repair their cars, shoes or equipment. He understood and could fix zippers.
He is survived by his wife, Barb; son, Sven and wife, Shauna Tewksbury; son, Arn and wife, Sue Freda; two grandsons Silas Krebs and Cameron Ticherich; grand daughter, Cora Ticherich; sister in law, Meg Nagel, and two sisters, Sandi Key and Garee Zellmer.
A memorial gathering will be held August 17 at the Ute Museum, 1 to 4 p.m. Bring short stories and a loving heart.

Where do I begin with my wonderful memories of Stuie? Perhaps when I was a child and he came back from Germany ( and visited my family in NJ) with a VW which we all had never seen before. We all posed in front of it. When he married Barb, we all fell in love with our new 'cousin'. This really was the BEST thing he ever did. I have the distinction of 'saving his life' (his words) when he was stung by a swarm of bees. Sven was 3 months old, Barb was at work, and I somehow carried (dragged???) him to the Saab and drove in third gear to the hospital in Boulder. I'm sure glad I did because I continued to visit them as I got married, had kids and so on. Wonderful memories of the adventures we had together. One small thing I'll never forget - we were hiking & 4 or 5 year old Isa couldn't go one more step. He had her hold the end of his pole and then she could. Brilliant!! I've used that technique so many times, including with Isa's kids. I really loved Stuie and even though I haven't seen him in a while, I'll miss him, I'll miss knowing he is just a couple days drive away.

Stu Krebs was a hero of mine - a true wise man in my world. I enjoyed his take on life and the world an actually back in the day tried to create situations that he could talk to and influence others as to his world view . I view like Abby etc ... , I literally loved him because I needed his wisdom in my crazy life to ground me to a the earth and its gifts. Stu was just the best , I wish I had spent more time with him ,, maybe a raft trip that would have been cool , yet I am thankful for the times ( mostly meetings darn it) that I had the pleasure of being with Stu , always always made me a better person because of his example

Sending my deepest sympathy to the Krebs family. The Cox and Krebs families go way back in the history of Montrose. Stu was a very unique, special person who definitely left his mark on this community, as did his parents before him. My deep condolences! Marilyn Cox

Truly be was a community icon, and he will be greatly missed at community events. He enriched my life by his enthusiasm, involvement and words of wisdom and his love of the land. I have fond memories of Stu when he and Barb live in Fort Collins, and he taught at CSU. He is a lover of nature and a just world and good soul. Rest in Peace, Stu Krebs.

Stu and Barb both have been wonderful friends and examples of great living since we met nearly 50 years ago in Ft. Collins. Despite all else going on they joined efforts to bring sustainable energy to PRPA; I helped them move to Montrose and of course we climbed a peak (Sneffels, with elderly dog and very young children) before the weekend was over. Smart and experienced enough to be delightfully humble but always value-added. Deep appreciation for Barb's extraordinary handling of Stu's journey the past months (no surprise) and Stu's further example of how to leave the planet graciously, as he did everything else. Admiration and blessings from all my family as a great sustainability warrior moves on to other goat herds and worthy causes.

When I think of times spent with Stuie, my first thought is adventure and fun! What great memories I have visiting in the summers during my childhood. The bikes that he built, the house made out of tires, the goats I got to milk, and all the interesting things that were to be experienced when staying with him and Barb. Thank you for the wonderful memories.

When I first moved to Montrose I met Barb and Stu. Their friendliness and kindness were a balm to my homesickness. I came to know them as interesting, involved, educated people, dedicated to helping the environment. I think Stu was sometimes baffled by my irreverent, sarcastic humor, but he and I had some great conversations over the years. Montrose was very lucky to have Stu Krebs, and he will be missed.

To all of Stuarts family and friends - Kristine and I share our solidarity with you in your remembering, grieving, laughing. We know Stu-ee (Stuart) because of Garee (Gareth) his sister and our sister-in-law. Garee oves and admires Stu-ee for his life of freedom, reverence of/for the earth and all living things. We regret that we never had the opportunity to know him, listen and learn from.

My condolences to all family and friends on the loss of this exceptional, marvelous human being. He had a magnificent heart, and an equal mind. He will be profoundly missed. Interestingly, I just discovered his obituary today after having just planted a new sapling in my yard! How timely.
