Mary Burton Obituary

Mary Alice Burton was born in Lynchburg, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Moore County High School and Middle Tennessee State College. She participated as an officer in the Young Farmers and Homemakers where she met her first husband on a Ramp Tramp. She worked as a secretary for AERO until she began teaching school. She taught the first kindergarten class in Moore County in 1969-70. Mary Alice continued to teach kindergarten until, as she put it, she "was allowed to pass to first grade". She remained a first-grade teacher in Moore County Schools until her retirement.
Mary Alice was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lynchburg but loved and visited all of the Methodist Churches in Moore County as well as Fayetteville First UMC. She was proud to be a part of the Moore County Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, T.O.P.S, and the Lynchburg FCE. Mary Alice was an avid square dancer as well as an amazing hostess and cook. She became known for her fried pies which she often delivered to those who were sick. Mary Alice loved people and spent her life developing deep and long-lasting relationships with family members and friends. She lived out the remainder of her days in assisted living in Spring Hill where she led exercise class, and NHC Franklin where she avidly participated in activities.
Mary Alice is preceded in death by her two husbands Dorris Edris Cooper and Willie E. "Ted" Burton. Her parents Jessie May (Millsap) and Thomas Herman Dance, and her great uncles Luke and Will Millsap who helped to raise her. She is survived by her daughter Marijo Cooper Bond, son-in-law Allen Bond, and granddaughters Samantha Bond and Jordan Bond.
Her Memorial Service will be held at Lynchburg First United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, Tennessee on Saturday June 26 at 10:00 AM with a visitation beginning at 9:00 AM.
