Larry Thompson Obituary

Larry David Thompson

December 4, 1948 - March 30, 2025

Larry David Thompson, age 76, of Garden City, SC and formerly of Gastonia, NC; passed away peacefully with his wife, Denise, by his side on Sunday March 30, 2025. He was born on December 4, 1948 in Great Lakes, Ill. to the late Clarence Carlisle and Velma Sorenson Thompson.

Along with his parents, Larry is reunited in passing with his brother, Jim Thompson.

Larry proudly served our country in the United States Navy. He was a man best remembered for his actions rather than his words. If there was ever anyone in need, he was there. Even when you didn't ask, it was done. When he did speak, everyone listened because you could be assured it was either going to be a well thought out opinion/suggestion or just an off the wall joke to make you laugh. In his spare time, he enjoyed volunteering at Brookgreen Gardens where he was a proud nine-year "Handy Vol" Volunteer. In addition, to those that knew him, he also enjoyed satisfying his insatiable need to go to the grocery store… or two (probably three) and could always tell you where to get the best deals. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, fixing things, cooking, spending time with friends and family and spoiling his grandchildren. He will be remembered with love, laughter and friendship.

Left to cherish Larry's memory are his adoring wife, Denise Yarborough Thompson of Garden City, SC; son, Brandon Thompson and wife Natalie, of Pawleys Island, SC; son, David Thompson of Mooresville, NC; and daughter, Alice Thompson Smiley of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandchildren, Ariel Peterson, Angel Millington, Meris Thompson, Reese Thompson and Aria Thompson; four great grandchildren; brother, Robert "Bobby" and wife Susan of Mooresville, NC; sister in-law, Anne Thompson of Dunn, NC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; a large, loving, extended family and many supportive friends and neighbors.

A Celebration of Larry's Life will be held on Saturday April 19, 2025 at 12 p.m. at Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558 Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. The family will gather to greet friends following the service. Military Honors will be held during a private burial at sea ceremony.

The family wishes to acknowledge and personally thank all his dear friends and family who have offered their love, comfort, and support during this time of sorrow. An extra special thanks to the wonderful nurses at MUSC ICU unit, who took such good care of us during the stay. May God bless you!

Worked with Larry for many years during his IBM time. He handled office depot for years. Believe he retired 2008 from charlotte office. We had lunch together many times with other techs at a diner down the road. Had chinese food on his last day with ibm with other ibmr's. Sorry to hear of his passing, he was missed on his retirement, while we had to cover him at office depot. Best to family.
