January 13, 1950 - December 23, 2020
Thomas Edward Poteat, 70, of Mooresville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 13, 1950, in Charlotte, to the late Harry and Clara McKnight Poteat. Mr. Poteat was owner and operator of Piedmont Nursery for the last 35 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mooresville. Tom dedicated countless hours over the years to youth sports, investing in children by coaching and refereeing multiple sports at various levels. Over the years, Tom has enjoyed golfing with friends and family and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carolyn Whittington Poteat; son, James Poteat and wife, Kimberly; sister, Cynthia Team; brothers, Steve Poteat, Gary Poteat; and grandchildren, Samuel, Margaret, Charlotte, and Benjamin.
A service will be announced for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice.

I am so sorry to hear of Toms passing, he was always a pleasure to work with. I had the pleasure of doing my first 2 college softball games with Tom. He was always very professional. Praying for his family...RIP my friend...

I am happy to have gotten to know Tom through officiating lacrosse and volleyball. He was a great guy, always bringing a positive attitude and good humor. I'm sorry for the family's loss.

My mother, Carrie Baskin, send much Love, Sympathy, and Prayers floating your way, in the loss of Tommy. She is a few weeks away from 99 years old and has fond memories of living in the same neighborhood and working with Clara and Carolyn at Belk Store Services. They were always nice to her. She and all the Baskin's send our sorrow, love, and prayers for comfort.
