Thomas Scott Caldwell Jr.

Thomas Scott Caldwell, Jr., 38, late of Mooresville, NC, died at his home on Sunday, March 21, 2026.

Surviving Tom is his father, Thomas Scott Caldwell, Sr., of East Berlin, PA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Paula Elizabeth (Sterner), and his younger brother, Eric Adam Caldwell. He also leaves behind a maternal aunt, Wendy Levin (IL), a 5 year old nephew, Colton Caldwell (PA), and 4 cousins.

Born on October 28, 1987, Tom was raised in East Berlin, and graduated from Bermudian Springs High School in York Springs. He earned a BS in Physics and Mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Doctorate in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Participation in soccer and gymnastics throughout his life balanced Tom's laser focused study of experimental particle astrophysics, specifically dark matter. He did his postdoctoral research work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was ultimately promoted to a research scientist position. Prior to his death he was employed by the Department of Biostatistics at UNC, where he held the position of software developer/data analyst and IT business intelligence analyst.

As a scientist, Tom was passionate about his work, dedicated and hard working. As a family member he was a kind, helpful and loving son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin. He will be sorely missed.
