Billy Moffitt Obituary

Billy Moffitt OLD FORT Mr. Billy Eugene "Gene" Moffitt, 77, of Old Fort, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour Saturday, July 2, 2011. He was born Feb. 13, 1934 in Burke County, to the late Harry Eugene Moffitt and Violet Massagee Moffitt. He was of the Wesleyan faith, attending Mt Hebron Wesleyan Church in Old Fort. Mr. Moffitt was a veteran of the U.S. Army having attended the Army Language School in Monterey, California, going on to serve in the Military Intelligence during the Korean Conflict and stationed in Germany. Mr. Moffitt attended Lenoir-Rhyne College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and went on to Indiana University where he finished with a Masters of Arts. He taught Russian and English at Long Beach Unified School District, and Russian at the Long Beach City College, in Long Beach California, McDowell High School in Marion and Freedom High School in Morganton. After retiring from teaching, he traveled to Russia where he taught English to Russian speaking men at Vladmir University. He also enjoyed working with the Marion Senior Center and their Meals on Wheels program. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son Matthew Moffitt and one brother Darryl Moffitt. He is survived by his wife Betty Jean Keller Moffitt of the home one son Michael Moffitt and his wife Robin. Two grandchildren, Jessie and Molly Moffitt. Four sisters, Barbara Moffitt Bliss and Becky Moffitt Harrison both of Connelly Springs. Harriette Moffitt Peebles and husband Ron of Gainsville, Fla. and Shelia Moffitt Powell of Norfolk,Va., and his brother Mickey Moffitt of Norfolk, Va. The family will receive friends Friday, July 8, 2011 at Mackie-High Funeral Home in Granite Falls from 2 until 4 p.m.. The funeral service will be Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Hebron Wesleyan Church, Old Fort with a graveside service to follow at Cherry Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Old Fort with Rev Todd Hinson officiating. Betty, Iam sorry to hear of Gene's passing. It has been many years since we worked together at Grace nursery. My prayers are with you and your family.

It has been years since I have seen you, but I saw Gene's obituary on line and wanted to get in touch and tell you that my heart goes out to you. I just recently lost my husband also (May 27). Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Betty Jean,
It has been many years (1950s) since I played softball with Gene, the two of you were newely married then. We remember him taching Russian to your dog. He was a great guy and we rejoice with you in his many accomplishments, contributions and Godly faith and influence.

Gene and I were varsity basketball teammates at Granite Falls High for three years. We reestablished contact a few years ago via email but never had an opportunity to meet again, in person. I regret that. He was a "character"!
