Carla Chervin Obituary

Carla Chervin

March 22, 1963 - January 21, 2021

Carla Maria Chervin — award-winning poet, mother, grandmother, instructional designer, and curriculum development director — died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, at the age of 57.

Born in NYC in 1963, Carla grew up an identical twin: stories of her childhood were filled with the imaginative games and adventures she created with her sister, Diana, and later, their younger brother, Charlie. Throughout Carla's life, she was beloved by all who met her, for her fierce intellect, analytical nature, inner strength, and the infinite reservoir of love she possessed for family and friends.

Carla's multi-layered, intricate writing—each line unspooling its own thread of deeper meanings—won her awards and recognition for poems such as "The Falcon was in Love," and "Sisters," as well as "Niobe's Prayer," and in 2017, her poem "A Song Sung by a Fish" was adapted to video form. When it came to her career, she was a self-professed "workaholic," who produced stunningly high-quality work at startling speeds. She worked with such companies as Educadium, ATI, General Motors, and CT Courses, and was the co-founder of SoftSkills Interactive, Two Steps Ahead, and PC Enterprises.

Whether in art, work, or friendship, Carla was a friend and mentor, who lent her passionate support to the ambitions of others, while simultaneously challenging them to grow even deeper into their craft. If there were a single message Carla imprinted on every person she met – a guiding philosophy in her life – it was, in her words, to always "Take the joy." She believed that something beautiful could be found in every moment, something she proved with her own life, as she endured hardships ranging from tragic deaths in the family, to a broken back, and her long struggle against cancer. Through all of this, she never stopped "taking the joy," and inspiring others to do the same.

Carla was a giant within her family. Today, she is survived by her mother, Ronda; aunt, Carla; mother-in-law, Jo; husband, Steve; sister, Diana; brother-in-law, Pete; closest friend, Jim; five children, Nicholas, Alexander, Maximilian, Zachary, and Martina; her daughters-in-law, Veronica and Ioana; niece, nephew, and niece's husband, Jennifer, Christopher, and Sean, as well as her great-nieces and great-nephew, Teresa, Julia, and Francis; and, of course, her legacy shines on brightly through her young grandchildren, Zaharina and Nathaniel, both of whom she had never expected to live long enough to meet, and both of whom she loved deeply.

Carla once wrote that "Every exhalation is a new letter in the alphabet of a life," and the life she breathed into the world will continue to thrive, long after her death. To all who knew her, may her memory be a blessing.

You would have edited this into something good, just like you were always editing me into something better. I hope you are with God now and that I will see you again one day.

On Receiving Carla´s Book

Beat my head upon the book,
Go and have another look.
These words are flesh within my mind,
All the `You´ that I can find.

Here´s a hip, and there, an eye,
Put it down and have a cry.
Black and white dance on a page,
But they´re trapped within a cage.

How much does the volume weigh?
Try to put it up, away.
But I´ll bring it down again,
Grasping for the soul within.

Three years ago, eternity broadened as Carla's soul stretched forth, like a beautiful butterfly, into the deepest interstices of time and space...and yet whatever new revelations fill her immeasurable soul during her travels may be easily accessed by all who heed her sweet words, 'Take the joy."

In clouds and thickets, fogs and smokes of time
where, pitiless, the seconds try to fall
beside themselves like snowflakes, it is wise
to see where they collect. Don´t let your eyes

start counting. I will warn you as you cup
your sanguine fingers at the cipher sky
in search of promises: they won´t arrive
except in modest kisses, like the feet

of winter on your cheek. We will survive
this lack of knowledge. When a flask is full
of restless answers, maybe it explodes -
too hot to listen. Possibly, it knows.

We needn´t rush toward culmination - let´s
walk gently, undefined despite the clasp
that longs for guarantee. For I´ll send you
myself inside one shaking silver flake

because that is the only way to live
a promise. There is nothing else to give.

I knew Carla mostly through her mastery of words and her incessant devotion to whatever kernels of truth she could unlock through them. She wrote her poetry and lived her life with her whole being, constantly pushing whatever boundaries time allowed, hurtling over preconceptions in a flurry of imagination that made one wish she might come to a safe landing. I never met Carla in person but I did speak with her and Diana over the phone. I met them at The Poetry Pub when the internet was in its infancy. We knew each other as kindred souls of the heart. I know she adored her family above all, treasuring each moment, absorbing them in her capacious mind until they flowered into something beautiful, always something beautiful. Yesterday, I watched a young hawk fly with ease over the wide mouth of Niagara Falls and down into the turbulence of the gorge...its tiny shriek echoing and then engulfing the majestic scene. That was Carla. My heart whispered, "Hello, little sister."

I had the opportunity to share a beautiful afternoon with Carla when we took a golf cart ride in North Carolina. We chatted about many things and our thoughts of life and how best it should be lived. We agreed, it should be with great enthusiasm and joy. She was a joy to be around and we shall all miss her but we shall from time to time feel her presence near. God Bless her and keep her close. She is loved.
