Horton of Rutherford College. Also surviving are the apples of her life, her grandchildren, Devin Hodges, Morgan B. Shew, Bradley Hodges, Justin Hodges; and a great-grandchild soon to be here.

The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Morganton First Apostolic Church, with funeral services to follow with Pastor David Bridges and the Rev. Gragg Benge officiating. Interment will be held in the Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery in Newland.

One of my favorite memories of Fran was when we both worked in the office at the bakery. At that time my mother lived in Texas and wanted to do something special for me so she handmade several maternity outfits and sent them to me. The outfits were not very flattering and not at all my style but I promised my mother I would wear them to work. Not wanting to lie to my mother, I picked the outfit I felt was the least humiliating and wore it to work. In the coffee area of the office that morning, getting a cup of coffee, wearing the made-with-love-but-hideous outfit, Fran came up to talk to me. She asked if I was wearing something new. Now, I was 5'11" and a full 8 months pregnant at that time and I was hard to miss in that bright peach colored top and full ankle length skirt with the matching hair tie for my ponytail. I told her about my mother making the maternity outfits for me and even showed Fran where my mother had hand sewn lace along the edges of the skirt. Then I explained how I had promised to wear them to work and didn't want to break that promise. Fran quietly smiled and then she patted my arm in an understanding motherly way and quietly said to me, "You're such a good daughter". I still laugh when I think about that day. I never wore another one of the outfits to work.

Fran was one of the kindest people I have ever known and she will be missed.
