Marsha Lynn Poteat Lyle

Marsha Lynn Poteat Lyle, 62, of Morganton, passed over the rainbow to be with her daughter in Paradise Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022.

Marsha was born in Burke County Dec. 15, 1959, to the late Clarence and Weeta Poteat. She was the third of four lovely daughters. Marsha enjoyed sports and was very athletic throughout her school years. She graduated from Freedom High School in 1977. A year later, she married Ray Anthony Lyle and had their only child, Melissa Rae Lyle, in that same year. Her love for sports continued through her daughter as she coached Melissa's basketball teams at Salem over the years, as well as playing softball for the industrial league and the textile plant for which she worked. One year, she won the best batting average with 0.667. After working in textiles for a number of years, Marsha want back to college to pursue a degree in physical therapy. She worked twelve years in home health. Being a caregiver was her passion, and her patients loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence J. Poteat and Weeta S. Poteat of Glen Alpine; and her daughter, Melissa Rae Lyle of Morganton.

She is survived by the love of her life of 22 years, Brian Wheeler; his children, Isaac, Kenlea and Brianna; Brianna's daughter, Raelynn; the father of her only child, Ray A. Lyle; sisters, LuAnn Landau (Bob), Shirley McClellan (Mike), and Julie Harmon; nieces, Jennifer McClellan (Josh), Leslie Lane (Scott), Miranda Yerry (Matt), Emily Harmon (Jonathan), Sasha Landau (Victoria) and Mary Lyle; and numerous other cousins and loved ones.

Marsha's premature death she felt was the result of grief and depression. She did not take her own life, but she never gave herself permission to be happy after losing her precious daughter. She was too busy being strong for everyone else. Marsha wanted to add this in her obituary so that maybe it would help one person try to overcome chronic depression and try to live as happy as they can because you can mourn yourself into an early death. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m., at the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service. A receiving of friends will be held the night before the service Friday, Dec. 16, from 6 to 7 p.m., at Heritage Funeral Service.
